Coaches speak ahead of the 2024 Magic City Classic
Updated: 12:40 PM CDT Oct 23, 2024
As the head coach of the Bulldogs again, if you weren't tuned in. I, so we're gonna wait on him. We go, we're gonna go to in his third season. Yeah, I had *** whole sermon set up for you, but now the gentleman and I compared the shaft last year and to make sure that he, and again, I got to find out so much about his family history. Uh, and again, all of his deep swack roots representing the Mighty Hornets in his third season, head coach Eddie Robinson Junior, please come up here and, uh, tell us what's about to happen. It's awesome in high school. All right. Good afternoon. So, um, you know, when you get on time to places like early, like I did, um, I was here helping set the cones up and everything. I was the first one here. And so, and I gave per $20 to make sure that he introduced Maynard first even though May is supposed to go last. So per I need my $20 back. So you, you had it right. You should have just kept going. He was only, only me, you and him knew. So just stick with the plan next time. But I, so uh first of all, I wanna thank everybody for coming. Uh We realize this is the 83rd Magic City Classic. Uh We understand how big this is. Uh love the crowd here. Uh It's *** crowd. Uh Doctor Charles mcclelland with the swack office can say is similar to the same crowd that we get for the uh swag media Day, which is huge for us. So we wanna thank you for coming. If this is your first time, uh we wanna welcome you back if you, if you're *** regular visitor here. And for me being the 30th head football coach of Alabama State University is truly *** pleasure. And I wanna thank those guys who made that possible. Uh Starting with our president, Doctor Quentin Ross of Alabama State University, um our board of trustees and we have some board of trustees members here. I wanna thank you. Uh Also our chairwoman of the board, Brenda Brown Stewart, uh also uh Brenda Brown Diller. Yes, my apologies. Um Also uh Doctor Jason Cable, our athletic director, of course, and Colonel Clark, our executive director, just some of the people that are here today uh representing Alabama State University. And uh before I go any further, I'm, I'm gonna definitely start with our student athletes. So we, we know all of the adults are here um for *** reason, but the, the biggest reason that we're here is for our student athletes and I have two young men here today. If you wanna stay the first one, uh, stand up. Yeah, y'all playing the game. We just gonna be on the sidelines. So they, they're here to see you. Uh, the first one is Demarcus Cunningham. He's *** senior, uh, junior linebacker, uh, out of Bessemer City, Alabama. Local guy has been doing great here is scheduled to graduate this, um, Bessemer City High School, uh, and he's scheduled to graduate this fall. Uh, give him *** hand, raise your hand and standing next to him is James Burgess out of Huffman high school, ***, *** state champion in basketball who's been starting for us the last couple of years, three interceptions on the year. Uh, James give him *** hand. All right. So I just wanna, you guys sit down, um, and I, and I, and I will be brief because you have somebody that's way more entertaining on the mic that's coming after me. So, uh, but I just wanna let everybody know that. First of all, we appreciate everything. I know Mary Woof may have stepped out. Um, but the Birmingham promise has been huge to us. Uh, we recruit, uh Birmingham City Schools. We have 10 players on our team from in the city of Birmingham, uh Ramsey Parker High School. And so we appreciate those guys, uh, Huffman and we appreciate everybody that comes out here and supports us and we realize that you can be anywhere, but you chose to be here at the Magic City Classic. And we realize when it's ***, when it's *** situation where instead of calling it the Magic City Classic, they just call it what the classic. So that mean it is the classic, which means it's the biggest H BC U Classic. Uh 83 years. Uh I played in *** very long time ago, uh have been having the privilege to coaching it the last couple of years and we realized how important it is to the city of Birmingham. And so, uh, I'm gonna go back to something. Our president told us when the season started, I'm gonna get into the football part of it. He said, um, the time is now and it's our time. That was our mission as we started the season. And so right now, we feel like the time is now and it's our time. I, I love this game when I was on the, the swack media call. They talked about, hey, coach you right in the, the Swack East race and coach Maynard is right in the Swack East race. We have *** lot of football left. I said, man, this ain't about the swack East. This ain't about *** swag championship. This is the classic. And so we realize why we're here, we realize that everybody's here to, uh, watch *** great football game and I know Maynard was *** little bit late because he was drawing up *** couple more plays, he an offensive guy and they always got one more play and uh he brought his talented quarterback with him and, and I know he got *** couple more plays too. And so, uh, but we know we're *** defensive team so styles make fights. So it's gonna be *** great game from the standpoint that, that Maynard wants to score 50 points and I wanna win 3 to 2. So, uh, we're gonna be on Ops Sizer, so we're gonna be on opposite sides of what we're trying to do and I think that's what's gonna make it great. And, uh, and before I sit down, like I said, I'm gonna be brief. I think I have it in my pocket. I, I had *** whole lot more but I left the rest of it. So we wanna give coach Maynard *** round of applause. Let me tell you why. Um, *** couple of weeks earlier, uh, he had his 1/100 win. So congratulations, coach. And what's your total number now? You won *** couple more games after that y'all at one? Oh, what? 110, I think it's 102 or 103 now. 103, right? And so I know you like golf because I play with you. And so I bought you some Masters ball markers. So you can, you always closest to me anyway, you get to the, to the hole before I do so that way you can mark your ball. So I, you get out of my way because it's gonna take me *** couple more to get there. So I'm gonna leave these up there for you. All right. And I put *** note in the bottom. Don't open it until after the game. All right. And so I, I feel like with *** man that has 100 plus career wins, he don't need one more on Saturday. Thank you again, coach Eddie Robinson Junior. And yeah, styles do make fights again. Told you, I hope everybody's getting this down because man, they, they're giving you gold out here. Uh And not just you wait in the, in the three plus years now that I've known uh co JD Robinson Junior, we have developed such *** rapport and I just got to respect him more and more for his leadership style and how he tr I've watched him how he treats uh this young man Anderson and the young women that are on his staff as well. Uh Again, you know, I, I say this each and every year, if you're on the fence about where to send your Children, your student athletes, you have two great universities, please start. Look here first, do that first. And if they're talented football players, you have two amazing men helping to develop your young student athlete into *** great person. So again, you could not make better choices. Um Now if you're playing golf to the point of, uh, Coach Robinson said I have never seen an active football coach as good and we do the region's tradition, uh, also, so we have *** lot of really good golfers that are out there. Uh, and nobody wants to draw coach Mayor as part of that line up. Uh, they're still so, so on the internet. So that means it had to be true that, uh I saw you. Richie, Richie Eddie Beaman. Sometimes he still do that at practice guys. Does he still come by the 13? The shark and to do that? Ok. All right. So again, it bears repeating because it is *** significant fact in pop culture. Uh Steven Willie Beamen, actual Willie Beaman from, from any given Sunday, the actual stunt quarterback that was doing all those things was coach Maynor as well. So at this time, he's got *** lot to say and I'm gonna let him do it in the seventh season leading the mighty bulldogs from the heel is coach Connell Maynor. Welcome coach Connell Maynor to the front. Maybe so. Oh, first of all, I want to thank my personal savior Jesus Christ without him. I would be nobody. I am nobody. Um Eddie, my ad told me I only had two minutes. Don't go over like you did. So how much time I got go ahead do now. Uh The mayor left, he probably left. I probably the reason he left because I was late. But uh of course, I wanna thank the mayor, acknowledge him *** great mayor. He had busy, busy, busy man and he found time to come here and be with us today. And that's one thing you can't get back is time. So appreciating the mayor and his staff for being here. And of course, you know, I got to introduce or, or say something about my commissioner and the best commissioner there is in college football commissioner mccullough. My man, my man does *** great job, does *** great job of super job. Uh, stays under the radar. Don't want all the attention, but he's doing *** tremendous job and uh building this conference and getting us to where we need to be, we will be the best conference in F CS football. Uh Of course, I got to know my president, the 12th president of Alabama *** and M University. Daniel K Williams. I, I see he got some of his cabinet with him. Do now you, you think I got some jokes that boy got jokes. I get them from him. I asked him, I asked for one day. He said he didn't have nothing so I don't have nothing. Uh, my ad, uh, Paul Bryant is doing *** tremendous job since he's been there. Uh Not only with football with all the sports and uh uh he's taken us to, to higher heights. Paul Bryant, it's not the Paul Bryant, just Paul Bryant. All right, I'm gonna induce my players, uh, first, uh, my defensive player, uh, middle linebacker number 10, Cortez Andrews, um, great football player drop. He'd be graduating in December with *** three point. Oh, right there. Next is my quarterback Xavier Langford, uh, co offensive, he was co offensive player of the week, last week, three touchdown passes over 320 yards and another 77 rushing with another touchdown. So, uh Xavier has already graduated and he graduated with *** 3.5 GPA. Yeah, uh mcdonald's Magic City Classic presented by Coca Cola the 83rd. I remember it was the 77th. It seemed like it was just yesterday. I was like the 83rd. I was thinking it was like 80 70 79 or something. 83. I'm getting old. Oh, it's *** blessing though. It's *** blessing. But this is like Eddie said the classic classic. Um He said it, he not worried about winning the conference. He's worried about winning the classic. And, uh, so am I so am I, I mean, this is what we wanna do. We wanna win the Classic. It's the biggest game of the season. We always say it's the biggest game of the season because the next game, ok, it is the next game, but this is the classic. Ok? We wanna win the classic bragging rights for *** year. Eddie had him for the last two years. So, um, 80 you had it long enough, bro, you had it long enough. You're *** good man. You're *** good coach. Uh, but it, it's time to bring it back home. We gotta bring the trophy back there, back to, uh, Huntsville. Ok. It's all right. We all, we all just keep fighting, keep fighting. Uh, again, the, the game is, uh, is an honor and *** pleasure, uh, for me personally to coach in the Magic City classic, the coach for *** and M and uh for our players to play in it. Uh We're gonna go to the museum tomorrow, of course. And those guys get to experience that and see what their ancestors went through and pay the price and, and uh the Trailblazers that paved the way for those guys. And so they're gonna actually get to see that now and uh if it were for the Magic City Classic in this game, *** lot of those guys won't get to see that. Ok. *** lot of times is what we do the first time for these guys flying on airplanes, uh going to museums and things like that, getting *** chance to play in the Magic City Classic. Um I told those guys, some of their sons probably get *** chance to play in the Magic City Classic. Hopefully they'll play, be playing for *** and M and not the other school. But if they do it still be *** great, it'd be *** great institution. This is another H BC U and that's what it's all about. It's all about the players, it's all about the H BC US and, uh, it's not about me or anybody else. It's always about the players and that's what I always tell those guys. So this game is about them and, uh, it's *** great opportunity. Ok, I'm gonna take the players by the, by the stadium when we leave here so they can see how many people are already there tailgating. How serious this thing is. People take off weeks. I think uh the high schools don't go to class on Fridays and things of that nature. So, um I know my guys ain't going to class this week except for those two, they might go. Uh But again, it's, it's, it's been great. Uh I heard uh Dale tell the mayor uh after he did his advertising, that's not fair after he did his advertisement that the check is in the mail. Yeah, somebody please tell the mayor that I'm still waiting for my checks from last year. Uh I go to the mailbox every day morning. What you doing baby? They said checks in the mail. So Dale. Ok. Yeah, I mean we went viral last year with, with the coffin. We went viral. Y'all made *** lot of money. I ain't made nothing. So I say, you know what the Bible says, it's better to give than receive. I didn't receive check. So we're gonna let it ride this year, but, uh, I'm looking forward to it, man and, uh, Eddie Robinson is *** great man, *** great football coach. And, uh, he, I appreciate this gift. Eddie and acknowledgment of the 100 games. Um, I think it's 102 now. Um Sunday hopefully be 103. Ok. But, uh, other than that, everybody have *** blessed day.
