I-65 is expanding after two projects to widen the lanes are underway.
These projects are a part of the 'Go Wide 65' campaign which will add lanes to the highway from Huntsville down to Mobile.
For these phases of this campaign, eight bridges will be replaced and widened to cut down on congestion and improve the flow of traffic.
"Eight million tourists going to the coast every year. It's our main thoroughfare for just, you know, industry trucks going up and down, people traveling. I think it's just going to be so important for economic development, but also just for, you know, it shouldn't take, from North Alabama, shouldn't take 10 hours to get to the beach. It should take five," says Alabama Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth.
Extensive engineering work and special materials will be needed, especially during bridge construction.
The 'Go Wide 65' project could take up to a decade to complete.
