Up the hill from a demolition happening on Prince Avenue, live sisters Linda Able and Jeannette Hamm.
Both are glad they will no longer have to drive past the eyesore of what used to be the Vue on Prince apartments.
"If we have visitors coming, we always direct them from Avenue West. We didn't want them to come from down there, Able said. Her sister Hamm agreed, saying, 鈥淲e made them come from Avenue West and make them go back onto Avenue West."
A judge recently ruled in the City of Birmingham鈥檚 favor, saying the property owners must tear down the 75 individual units.
鈥淭his is an important milestone for our community. I'm glad it's finally happening,鈥 Able said.
, the city of Birmingham noted more than 40 code violations and mandated the property owners to take care of it by March. That summer, firefighters were called out several times. City leaders say residents complained the property was a nuisance, a site for criminal activity and a place for illegal squatters.
Courtney Triplett, who lives across the street, said, 鈥淗omeless people setting fires, causing disturbance, possible ODs. You know a lot of rapes. A lot of things went on over there. It's about time it came down.鈥
As longtime homeowners and retirees on the Ensley block, sisters Linda and Jeannette have an idea of what to do with the property.
"It doesn鈥檛 need to be any more apartments down there for sure. Commercial is ideal. Whatever it is, I pray they keep it up,鈥 Able said.
The City of Birmingham attorney, Nicole King, said in a statement to 米兰体育-TV Birmingham,
"The Drug and Nuisance Abatement Team (DNAT) team in the Office of the City Attorney is dedicated to addressing problem properties that create a nuisance and public safety concerns for neighborhoods. The city filed a lawsuit following inaction by the property owner to address multiple code violations and repeated fires at the buildings. Residents were clear about their concerns at this location and we were committed to have this dangerous blight removed. Due to this successful effort, the property was demolished without additional cost to the city. DNAT is committed to breaking down blight one property at a time."
