Alabama took the first step in making medical marijuana a reality. The Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission approved licenses for 21 businesses to grow, sell and transport the plant. But they denied the vast majority of applications.
Creek Leaf Wellness now deals with CBD products. Their building in Birmingham is 25 thousand square feet, but they鈥檙e already expanding, hoping to get in on the medical cannabis industry. They were one of the companies denied a license, but the owner says he's not giving up.

That's why he pivoted his hemp company and invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to expand into a cannabis grow operation. Hungerpiller says, 鈥淲e have a master plan here that's down at city hall it鈥檚 been approved鈥�.this is phase one and phase two with a total spend of over 11 million dollars.鈥�

The denial of a business license by the state is disappointing, but Hungerpillar says he's not giving up. He expects as the industry grows so will the need for more cultivators. 鈥淲e just wanted to build a world-class, pharmaceutical-grade operation to produce the raw material...the best quality raw material for cannabis research.鈥�
The commission granted only four cultivator licenses. But they may hold hearings and reconsider licensing for companies like Creek Leaf Wellness, which were denied.
