While her trial may be over a month away, the legal ramifications of Carlee Russell's infamous kidnapping hoax are already rippling across Alabama.Thursday afternoon, Alabama lawmakers joined Hoover police and State Attorney General Steve Marshall in pre-filing a bill about faking kidnappings.Alabama Sen. April Weaver says the bill is a direct response to Russell admitting to faking her abduction last July.The bill would make it a felony offense in Alabama to fake an abduction.Currently, it's only considered under false reporting laws, which is classified as a misdemeanor.Hoover police Chief Nick Derzis says the bill would help keep a similar story from happening again."We see it all too often around the country," Derzis said. "Active shooters, mass shooters. Sometimes, they've been at Walmart and schools. It brings just a different element to your community. People need to have a sense of safety where they live, and we're going to ensure they do in Pell City, and we are not going to tolerate someone causing this amount of chaos, one for our citizens and two for our corporate business partners."In addition to heftier jail time, violators would also be required to repay the money spent by law enforcement while undergoing a search proven to be fake.
