Alabama will warm up to start the weekend, but strong storms return to the state Sunday night and Monday morning. Check the video forecast for the latest.
WARMING UP FRIDAY
After a frigid bite of cold air this morning, temperatures are climbing quickly. Highs will climb to the mid-60s this evening, with less winds and clouds compared to yesterday.
Temperatures will fall tonight, but this weekend brings much warmer weather as winds turn from the Gulf
WEEKEND FORECAST
Both Saturday and Sunday will be nice and warm, and both days will be mostly dry.
Saturday will feature a chilly morning in the 30s and 40s, but the weather warms up quickly as high temperatures touch the low-70s in the afternoon under a mostly sunny sky.
A light southwest breeze Saturday grows a little stronger on Sunday, and a wind like that usually provides a bigger warming influence for North and Central Alabama. So, Sunday should be even warmer with highs in the upper 70s or even a few spots touching the lower 80s ahead of some storms that start after 6 p.m.
IMPACT DAYS: STORMS SUNDAY INTO MONDAY
A wave of scattered heavy thunderstorms moving in from the northwest Sunday evening will bring a limited risk of small hail and 50 mph wind gusts along with some locally heavy rainfall and frequent lightning. A brief tornado can't be fully ruled out this time of year, but, it's not looking likely.
The timeline for these storms is still a broad estimate, but we expect them to start roughly around 6 p.m. Sunday in northwestern Alabama and rumble southeast through the night ending before sunrise Monday.
Total rainfall through Monday will be generally less than one inch for most of North and Central Alabama.
QUIETER WEATHER AHEAD
Following Monday morning鈥檚 storms, the weather finally gets quiet for a few consecutive days next week.
We expect cool mornings, seasonably mild afternoons in the 60s and 70s, and no threat of significant rain or storms through at least the end of next week.
The over-all weather pattern favors higher than normal temperatures through next weekend and into early April.
April is the peak of tornado season in the South, and for now, we do not see any specific threats of stormy weather for the first few days of the month. Things can change quickly this time of year, so we will keep watch on it for you.
FOLLOWING TORNADO OUTBREAK
Three people are confirmed dead following a tornado outbreak in Alabama Saturday. Two people died in Plantersville and one person died in Winterboro.
National Weather Service crews are surveying areas of tornado damage after they identified 16 suspected tornadoes from Saturday's deadly outbreak.
It will take several days to survey the state. Several tornadoes ranging in strength from EF0 to EF3 have already been confirmed.
Sky 13 drone footage shows tornado damage below.
