Tornado risk in Central Alabama: Severe storms to hit during Monday commute

Tornado risk in Central Alabama: Severe storms to hit during Monday commute
TODAY IS AN ALERT DAY AS WE鈥橵E GOT THE THREAT FOR SOME SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THAT WILL BE ROLLING THROUGH AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE MORNING HOURS. THROUGH ABOUT LUNCHTIME. THEN I THINK ONCE WE GET INTO THE AFTERNOON HOURS, WE鈥橪L START TO SEE THE WEATHER IMPROVING A BIT. BUT ALL OF THE THE STATE REALLY THE ENTIRE STATE IS UNDER AN ENHANCED RISK FOR SEVERE STORMS THROUGH 1:00 THIS AFTERNOON FOR OUR AREA. THE MAIN HAZARDS SOME STRONG AND DAMAGING STRAIGHT LINE WINDS AND ISOLATED TORNADO IS POSSIBLE. MAYBE EVEN A LITTLE BIT OF HAIL AND CERTAINLY SOME VERY HEAVY DOWNPOURS WITH THUNDER AND LIGHTNING TOO. THE AMOUNT OF LIGHTNING THAT WE鈥橵E BEEN SEEING CERTAINLY COULD KNOCK OUT POWER, EVEN IF WE DON鈥橳 HAVE, OR EVEN IF YOU DON鈥橳 SEE THOSE SEVERE WINDS IN YOUR AREA. SO LOOK AT OUR PLANNER THROUGH ABOUT MIDDAY TODAY. LUNCHTIME. THAT鈥橲 WHEN WE鈥橰E EXPECTING THE WORST OF THE WEATHER TO ROLL THROUGH WITH THOSE STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS. AND THEN EVEN THROUGH THE AFTERNOON HOURS, THE ACTUAL FRONT DOESN鈥橳 COME THROUGH UNTIL LATER ON THIS AFTERNOON. SO THERE COULD STILL BE SOME ACTIVITY AS WE GET INTO THE AFTERNOON HOURS. I THINK IT WOULD BE MORE ALONG THE LINES OF A NARROW BAND OF THUNDERSTORMS, BUT THERE COULD STILL BE SOME LIGHTNING AND SOME GUSTY WINDS WITH THOSE, BUT WE STILL THINK THE MAIN SEVERE THREAT COMES THROUGH THIS MORNING. AS FAR AS ACTIVE WATCHES, WE DO HAVE A TORNADO WATCH IN EFFECT THAT DOES INCLUDE MARION WINSTON, CULLMAN, WALKER, FAYETTE AND LAMAR COUNTIES JUST FOR ABOUT THE NEXT 40 MINUTES. THIS IS SET TO EXPIRE AT 4:00. AND THEN WE鈥橵E GOT A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH JUST TO OUR WEST INTO MISSISSIPPI. IT IS POSSIBLE AND AND HIGHLY LIKELY THAT WE DO SEE A WATCH ISSUED FOR OUR AREA. IT鈥橲 BECOMING MORE LIKELY THAT WE鈥橪L SEE A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH THOUGH ISSUED ONCE IT IS ISSUED FOR NORTH, CENTRAL AND CENTRAL ALABAMA. BUT YOU CAN SEE THIS LINE OF STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS BACK THROUGH MISSISSIPPI AND THEN UP INTO PARTS OF NORTHWEST ALABAMA. AND A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF LIGHTNING. THAT IN AND OF ITSELF TO BE OUTSIDE IS DANGEROUS JUST WITH THE THE AMOUNT OF LIGHTNING THAT WE鈥橰E SEEING WITH A LOT OF THESE STORMS. AND WE EXPECT THAT TO CONTINUE. THERE鈥橲 AGAIN, A LOOK AT THE THE RADAR. SOME OF THE STRONGEST STORMS THOUGH, BACK HERE INTO MISSISSIPPI. THESE ARE MOVING EAST AT ABOUT 30 MILES AN HOUR. MAY STILL BE ABOUT AN HOUR AND A HALF AWAY BEFORE THEY START TO REACH SOME OF OUR WESTERN COUNTIES. METEOROLOGIST BRYLEE BROWN WE鈥橰E KIND OF TIMING THESE OUT TO LET FOLKS KNOW EXACTLY WHEN THEY CAN MOVE INTO THEIR AREA. YEAH, THEY鈥橰E SLOW TO MOVE IN, BUT THROUGH MIDDAY WE EXPECT SOME ROUGH WEATHER, HEAVY DOWNPOURS AND LIGHTNING, A GUARANTEE. BUT CERTAINLY SOME OF THESE COULD BECOME SEVERE WITH DAMAGING WIND GUSTS. AND WE鈥橰E GOING TO BE WATCHING CLOSELY FOR ANY ISOLATED TORNADOES THAT MAY TRY TO SPIN UP ALONG THE LINE, AS SOME OF THESE ARE MOVING IN. SO LOOKING AHEAD THIS MORNING, YOU CAN EXPECT HIGH IMPACT FROM WIND AND RAIN, ESPECIALLY AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE DAYLIGHT HOURS. ONCE THE SUN COMES UP ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA BY MIDDAY, A LOT OF THESE STORMS ARE MOVING DOWN TO THE SOUTH AND EAST, AND THERE COULD STILL BE SOME RAIN AND THUNDER AROUND, BUT IT IS GOING TO BE STARTING TO EXIT THE STATE THIS AFTERNOON, AS THE ACTUAL FRONT IS KIND OF MOVING SOUTH. WE鈥橪L PROBABLY SEE A NARROW BAND OF SOME RAIN AND THUNDER, AS STEPH MENTIONED, BUT NOT REALLY EXPECTING ANYTHING SEVERE. AFTER MIDDAY. LET鈥橲 LOOK AT THE FUTURE CAST HERE. SOME OF OUR MODELING. SO AGAIN, STORMS ARE SLOW TO MOVE IN, BUT SOME OF THESE BACK OFF INTO MISSISSIPPI SHOULD BEGIN MOVING IN OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS. 7 A.M. WE鈥橵E GOT MAINLY STORMS OVER THE TENNESSEE VALLEY AS WE GET CLOSER TO 8:00 9:00. HERE THEY COME, MOVING TOWARD THE BIRMINGHAM METRO AND EVEN PLACES LIKE TUSCALOOSA AND FAYETTE JASPER. VERY HEAVY THUNDERSTORMS. SOME OF THESE COULD CONTAIN SOME HAIL. I DO THINK THAT WE鈥橪L HAVE SOME SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNINGS. AND THEN AS WE HEAD INTO THE AFTERNOON, AS I MENTIONED, YOU CAN SEE THAT IT鈥橲 SHIFTING SOUTH AND EAST, AND IT鈥橲 MAINLY EAST OF I-65 AT THIS POINT, BUT STILL SOME VERY HEAVY STORMS UP TOWARD GADSDEN, ANNISTON, JACKSONVILLE, CENTRE, AND THEN EVEN DOWN TO THE SOUTH AND EAST TOWARD AUBURN. LOOK, THIS AFTERNOON WE鈥橵E STILL GOT SOME RAIN ON THE RADAR. SOME OF THESE THUNDERSTORMS APPEAR TO BE HEAVY. THIS WOULD BE AS THE FRONT IS WORKING TO THE SOUTH AND IT WEAKENS OVER TIME. BUT PLAN FOR SOME RAIN AND THUNDER EVEN THIS AFTERNOON. BUT SEVERE THREAT WILL BE PRETTY LOW AT THAT POINT. WE DO HAVE SOME STORMS IN THE SEVEN-DAY FORECAST PATTERN, KIND OF RESEMBLING SUMMERTIME, VERY WARM. WEATHER, RIVALING RECORD WARMTH TOWARD THE END OF THE WEEK. SO IT鈥橲 GOING TO GET CLOSE TO HOT A
