FIRST WARNING IMPACT DAY: STORMS CONTINUE THROUGH TUESDAY
Tuesday will be another 鈥淚mpact Day鈥 for Central Alabama.
Expect numerous showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon and evening. Temperatures will rise into the upper 70s and lower 80s in the afternoon away from the developing downpours.
There's a chance that some of these storms could become severe, meaning they could have winds exceeding 58 miles per hour and/or hail larger than the size of a quarter (about 1 inch).
See the deep dive into the timing and threats for Tuesday at the link below.
DRIER ON WEDNESDAY
A weak cool front will pass through Alabama Tuesday night enhancing the showers and storms as it arrives, but the air behind that front will be dry enough to get some drier weather for Wednesday.
It will get hotter Wednesday with more sunshine and a bit less humidity in the air. The chance of rain will drop to near zero north of Interstate 20 (Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Pell City and Anniston), but there will still be some scattered downpours to the south through Wednesday evening.
HEAVY STORMS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY
The stormy weather pattern will kick up again late Wednesday night into Thursday morning, and we will have more waves of rain and thunderstorms spaced about 12 to 18 hours apart through Thursday and Friday.
Specific timing will be difficult to pin down until we are closer to the actual time, but it looks now like we will have widespread rain early Thursday, again in the evening, and another round on Friday as an unusually strong cold front passes through Alabama.
The severe weather threat will be limited through the end of the week. We are very much in a summertime pattern, and almost any thunderstorm this time of year can quickly turn severe with little or no advance warning. Always be on your toes when storms are nearby in the summer months!
WEEKEND OUTLOOK
Drier, cooler air will move in for the weekend, and that will shut down the stormy weather for a few days. Saturday will be dry and unseasonably cool with a morning low down in the comfortable 50s.
Sunday will bring a low chance of some showers as an upper-air disturbance swings in from the north. Rain on Sunday will not have big storm potential, but some rain will be around here and there 鈥 especially over the northern half of the state.
LOOKING INTO JUNE
June begins on Sunday, and that is also the beginning of what we call 鈥渕eteorological summer.鈥 Summer鈥檚 start on the calendar is Friday, June 20 at 9:41 p.m. CDT, but it is going to start feeling more like it next week.
The persistently stormy weather pattern will finally slow down, and we will only have the normal hit-or-miss thunderstorms of summer starting the first full week of June.
It will start feeling a lot more like 鈥渘ormal鈥 late May to early June weather, too, with high temperatures pushing into the upper 80s and lower 90s each day toward the middle of next week.
