Wednesday's weather will bring the heat and some wind as a strong storm system brings severe storms and rain to our west. Sunday will be Alabama's next Impact Day with a threat of some heavy storms. Check the video for the latest forecast.
WINDY WEDNESDAY, STORMS TO THE WEST
Tuesday morning's low temperatures dipped as low as 37 in Oneonta, 38 in Fort Payne, 39 in Cullman, 40 in the Pinson Valley and 43 at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.
We will not be getting that chilly again for quite a while.
Wednesday morning will start out in the 60s (about 15 degrees above normal).
It will get even warmer from there.
A stiff southwest breeze occasionally gusting over 30 mph will help pump up the heat, and our afternoon highs will top out near records in the mid-80s.
There will be a slim chance of a few isolated showers or storms northwest of Jasper and Cullman Wednesday, but the threat of widespread intense thunderstorms and very heavy rainfall will stay northwest of Alabama on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The Storm Prediction Center outlines a Moderate Risk for severe storms including the threat for significant, intense tornadoes from Arkansas into Tennessee, Missouri and Kentucky, Wednesday afternoon and evening.
A strong ridge will keep all of this stormy weather northwest of Alabama through at least Saturday.
We will be near-record warmth in North and Central Alabama through Saturday, too.
IMPACT WEATHER THIS WEEKEND
Some scattered storms are possible Saturday, but Sunday is our next round of widespread rain and storms.
米兰体育 13 has declared Sunday an Impact Day. This means the weather could cause changes to your normal daily routine. If you have outdoor plans scheduled before 4 p.m. Sunday, it would be a good idea to have a backup plan.
The risk of severe weather looks somewhat limited right now. This particular wave of storms may bear some resemblance to what hit us on Monday of this week (March 31).
- Gusty winds capable of knocking down a few trees.
- Heavy rainfall that can cause some localized flooding (around 1-2 inches of rain).
- Hail up to the size of a quarter.
We will make adjustments to the forecast over the next few days to determine exactly how much of a severe weather threat we will face.
It is worth noting, the Storm Prediction Center has highlighted parts of Alabama with a risk of strong to severe storms Saturday into Sunday.
The reality, though, is that we are too far out to know any real specifics on timing and threats. Be sure you are checking back for more details in the coming days.
BEYOND THE SEVEN-DAY
The summer-like feel won't last long. We are always watching for weather changes this time of the year and we are seeing some signals of a pattern flip towards the middle of the month. The Climate Prediction Center is projecting temperatures to be below average across the eastern half of the United States through mid-April.
The blue color on the map doesn't necessarily mean we will turn "cold". This tells us more about the confidence in below average temperatures, not how low temperatures will go.
Gardeners beware! We do see some evidence of temperatures dropping low enough for patchy frost to develop. Stay tuned!
