Alabaster fire department debuts new ambulances to tackle occasional lengthy on-scene response times
The city of Alabaster launched its new in-house ambulance transport service. The goal is to cut down on response times.
Alabaster Fire Department Chief Cliff Dyson told 米兰体育 13 there were times patients had to wait 45 minutes or longer for an ambulance. That鈥檚 because the department used to rely on third-party ambulance services to transport patients to hospitals.
Dyson said part of the slow response time is due to a lack of staff.
鈥淲ith the changes that鈥檚 required to become a paramedic and stuff like that, the numbers are smaller,鈥 he said. 鈥淔ewer and fewer paramedics are coming out, so it鈥檚 harder for third-party ambulance companies to hire paramedics when they鈥檙e not out there. That鈥檚 how that was impacting us is the third-party company had fewer medics.鈥

Mandy Hill lives in Clanton, where she said residents recently voted to increase their car tag fees to fund an ambulance to serve Chilton County. She said she knows how important having access to an ambulance is because she鈥檚 seen it from both sides.
鈥淚t takes a whole lot less time to transport to a hospital and get what they actually need,鈥 Hill said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 very critical for myself. I have ridden in an ambulance, and it was in very critical states at that time. It is a matter of life and death for them, and for Alabaster to have an ambulance service, it鈥檚 life or death. It鈥檚 just a matter of time of how quickly you can receive before you need.鈥
