Gov. John Bel Edwards said during a news conference Monday all of Louisiana鈥檚 levee systems performed 鈥渆xtremely well鈥 as the powerful, Category 4 Hurricane Ida slammed the state. "Ida came in very much as advertised. Very, very strong storm. The rain, I know you mentioned the wind, it was catastrophic. But the rain fell along the track, just east of the track, it would have been what was advertised," Edwards said. "And when you push that much rain, you are going to have flooding issues and we certainly have people that are in the second floors of the house and some in the attic and so forth, we are rescuing right now. "Hurricane Katrina exposed how vulnerable the state's levee system is. It is not guaranteed safety for those living inside the levee protection system. After Katrina, the Army Corps of Engineers constructed the risk reduction system to better protect the area. "The one good news here, the good news this morning anyway, all of our levee systems performed extremely well, especially the hurricane risk reduction system around New Orleans and even non-federal levees in Lafourche, Terrebonne parish performed extremely well."Edwards said there was some overtopping in places where they expected it to happen. 鈥淚f we had to deal with failed levee systems this morning, it would be completely unimaginable. Thank goodness that is not what we are dealing with today,鈥 Edwards said. Plaquemines Parish government had issued a warning on Sunday to residents of the Braithwaite area between the Parish Line and White Ditch on the Eastbank urging them to seek higher ground after receiving reports from Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office of the levee overtopping at White Ditch. The National Weather Service also issued a flash flood warning on Sunday for Lafitte and Jean Lafitte until 6:45 a.m. Monday morning as local law enforcement reported a levee failing.
