Anthony Mitchell died in the hospital after spending two weeks in the Walker County Jail. Video from inside the jail shows an unconscious Mitchell being carried to a police car, and new pictures of him just days before he died have caused more outrage toward the sheriff鈥檚 department.
Anthony Mitchell鈥檚 sister, Maranda Mitchell-Gutzmer, said the family is doing the best they can right now, especially with how public the case has become.
鈥淚 can鈥檛 imagine what he went through for those two weeks that he was there,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e have so little to the full picture of everything, and if this is what we have seen, what else happened? Just thinking about what he went through for those two weeks is really hard. I just can鈥檛 even imagine that his last days on earth were that to be tortured essentially.鈥
The Mitchell family is suing the Walker County sheriff along with several employees of the department and two nurses who were on duty. The family desperately wants answers.
鈥淏ased on one of the filings from I believe the sheriff鈥檚 office or his attorney, they didn鈥檛 call an ambulance,鈥 Mitchell-Gutzmer said. 鈥淭hey admitted that they didn鈥檛 call an ambulance.鈥
But attorney LaBella McCallum who鈥檚 representing the nurses claims the accusations against her clients are 鈥渁bsolutely inaccurate鈥 and that the nurses did exactly what they were supposed to do.
鈥淣ot only do our nurses say that they asked for transfer their medical records that they make at the time that they provide care note that they asked for transfer,鈥 she said.
Mitchell-Gutzmer said she has a hard time believing that someone called for help.
鈥淚 hope that they did,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 hope that the medical records show that. I hope that they asked for a hospital transfer.鈥
McCallum said she hopes the truth will come out to clear her clients and the family gets the answers they鈥檙e looking for.
鈥淲e鈥檙e devastated that anybody would lose a loved one,鈥 McCallum said, 鈥渂ut the really devastating part of it is the story that they were told.鈥
And even though Anthony is gone, the family is still holding on to who he was.
鈥淚 hope people know that he was a person still,鈥 Mitchell-Gutzmer said. 鈥淗e was someone that people loved. And we miss him a lot.鈥
McCallum said it could be a few weeks before there鈥檚 a ruling because a change of venue was requested after the case was filed in the wrong location. If that request is granted, it will change the judge who was assigned to the case.
