Popular barbecue restaurant opening first Birmingham location in old Rib-It-Up building
DATE. TIME RIGHT NOW IS 535. AND THIS MORNING, A LONGTIME BIRMINGHAM BARBECUE SPOT IS GETTING A NEW LIFE. ALL RIGHT. ONE OF THE TOP TUSCALOOSA BARBECUE JOINTS IS COMING TO THE MAGIC CITY AND WILL CERTAINLY TAKE THAT. 米兰体育 13 ZOE BLAIR JOINS US LIVE FROM ITS FUTURE HOME. AND ZOE, THIS IS A BIG DEAL IN THE COMMUNITY. GOOD MORNING SCOTT AND CARLA. YOU GUYS ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. I WAS HERE YESTERDAY TO SPEAK TO THE OWNER OF ARCHIBALD WOODROW鈥橲 BARBECUE. THAT鈥橲 WHAT鈥橲 COMING HERE TO SMITHFIELD. WHILE I WAS HERE, I ACTUALLY GOT TO HEAR FROM SOME COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO SAY, THERE鈥橲 JUST BEEN A TON OF BUZZ OUT HERE ABOUT THE NEWS OF THIS RESTAURANT OPENING. RIGHT NOW, THAT OPENING DATE IS SET FOR MAY 5TH, AND ARCHIBALD HAS SOME BIG SHOES TO FILL. THIS BUILDING HAS BEEN HOME TO ICONIC BARBECUE RESTAURANTS FOR THE ENTIRE TIME. IT SAT HERE ON THE CORNER OF FIRST AVENUE NORTH AND NINTH AVENUE NORTH. MOST RECENTLY, IT WAS HOME TO RIP IT UP FOR OVER 30 YEARS BEFORE THAT RESTAURANT CLOSED IN JULY OF LAST YEAR. ANTHONY BRIDGEFORTH TELLS ME THIS IS AN ICONIC LOCATION FILLED WITH HISTORY, AND HE HAS NO DOUBT ARCHIBALD WILL BE ABLE TO CONTINUE THAT TRADITION AS A COMMUNITY MEMBER. AS A BUSINESS PERSON, AS SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTOOD THE THE THE LEGACY OF ARCHIBALD AND WOODROW鈥橲. THE 63 YEAR OLD BUSINESS OUT OF NORTHPORT, BRINGING THEM TO THE BIRMINGHAM AREA. WE鈥橰E VERY GOOD. Archibald and Woodrow's BBQ will open its first location outside of Tuscaloosa in May in a building with a long history of popular barbecue joints.Most recently, the building that sits on the corner of First Avenue North and Ninth Street North was home to Rib-It-Up BBQ for over 30 years. One Birmingham man said the barbecue history goes even further back than that."You know, this corner started out with old plantation," resident Anthony Bridgeforth said. "The corner has a history of barbecue, so the neighborhood knows that you can expect to have good barbecue at this particular location."Archibald's owner, Woodrow Washington III, said he understands the building's history, calling it an honor to be following in the previous tenant's footsteps."We had an opportunity to move to Birmingham, and what other place than the legendary Rib-It-Up?" Washington asked. "You know, great family, great tradition, and following right behind them would be an honor for us."Bridgeforth said he's known Washington for over 10 years and has spent that time trying to get Archibald's in Birmingham."It's been a 10-year odyssey," Bridgeforth said. "I met this fine gentleman over 10 years ago and have been trying to get him here ever since. So now, thank God he's here."After a decade of being recruited, Washington is officially setting up shop in the Magic City and says he can't wait for opening day."Birmingham is a great place 鈥� lot of great people and great leadership from the city," he said. "They've really opened their arms to us, so we really appreciate everybody."The grand opening of Archibald and Woodrow's BBQ is set for May 5.
