Active hurricane season in view? Early forecast for 2025
Hurricane season gets started next month, and 2025 could bring another very active season.
It's National Hurricane Preparedness Week, a time dedicated to promoting hurricane preparedness ahead of the Atlantic hurricane season's official start on June 1.
Factors that favor an active season:
- Reduced vertical wind shear
- ENSO neutral phase or La Nina
- Above-average sea surface temperatures
- Lack of dry Saharan air
A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS
2024 was a record-breaking hurricane season in the Atlantic Basin, with multiple storms shattering records.
Of the 11 hurricanes, five became major hurricanes.
Colorado State University issued its early forecast for 2025 with 17 named storms, nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes.
An average season normally has seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes.
PROBABILITY OF IMPACT
The Gulf Coast faces the highest probability of storm impact in Florida, followed by Louisiana.
Of course, every location along the Gulf Coast carries some risk. Even without a direct hit, hurricanes can have a wide reach. Distant tropical systems frequently generate swells that lead to hazardous surf and increased rip current risks.
Coastal residents are urged to make thorough preparations, regardless of the preseason forecast.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will issue its official outlook for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season at the end of May. Here is a list of storm names for 2025:
