6-month-old girl falls out of great-grandparents arms while sleeping, killed by family dog in Alabaster
MOMENTS. BRITTANY. JASON, THANKS. A TRAGIC SITUATION IN SHELBY COUNTY. A SIX MONTH OLD LITTLE GIRL ATTACKED AND KILLED BY HER GREAT GRANDMOTHER鈥橲 DOG. IT HAPPENED LAST WEEK AT AN ALABASTER HOME. POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THE CASE. 米兰体育 13 S LISA CRANE LIVE AND LOCAL IN ALABASTER RIGHT NOW. LISA, I KNOW THAT YOU SPOKE TO A FAMILY MEMBER TODAY. YEAH I DID. YOU KNOW, THERE ARE FIVE GENERATIONS OF THIS FAMILY, AND THEY TELL ME THAT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM FEELS GUTTED BY WHAT HAPPENED. THE BABY WAS BEING CARED FOR BY A GREAT GRANDPARENT. APPARENTLY, LITTLE BABY AMBER FELL ASLEEP IN THAT GRAND GREAT GRANDPARENTS ARMS. AND THEN AT SOME POINT, THE ADULT FELL ASLEEP. THEN THE BABY ROLLED AND FELL. AND WHEN THAT BABY CRIED, THEY SAY THAT鈥橲 WHEN THEIR PET, A PIT BULL, ATTACKED. THIS HAS JUST BEEN AN UNIMAGINABLE, UNIMAGINABLE LOSS FOR THE FAMILY. AMBER SOUTHARD WAS THE YOUNGEST IN A LARGE EXTENDED FAMILY. HERE SHE IS PICTURED WITH HER GREAT GREAT GRANDMOTHER. LAST FRIDAY, SHE WAS STAYING WITH THE GRANDPARENTS WHEN THEIR PET ATTACKED, LOSING HER IN SUCH A VIOLENT TRAGEDY IS HITTING EVERYONE HARD. I SPOKE TO A FAMILY MEMBER, BUT AS THEY PLAN FOR A FUNERAL, NO ONE WAS UP TO BEING ON CAMERA. IN NEARBY PELHAM, DOG TRAINER JIMMIE LEE SAYS SHE DIDN鈥橳 KNOW THE FAMILY. BUT WHAT HAPPENED BREAKS HER HEART. SHE鈥橲 HOPING OTHER PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS CAN LEARN FROM THIS TRAGEDY. IT鈥橲 JUST GUT WRENCHING TO THINK THAT THAT THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE IT IS PREVENTABLE. YOU KNOW, TAKE YOUR TIME, TAKE IT SO SLOW SO THAT THE DOG, BY THE TIME THE DOG IS, IS USED TO THE BABY. IT鈥橲 BEEN MONTHS. LEE SAYS ANY TIME A CHILD IS IN THE VICINITY OF A DOG, EVEN A PET YOU BELIEVE WOULD NEVER BECOME VIOLENT, THERE SHOULD BE AN ADULT BETWEEN BABY AND DOG. SHE SAYS THAT BECOMES EVEN MORE IMPORTANT WITH SOME DOG BREEDS LIKE PITBULLS. THEY WERE BRED TO KILL ANOTHER DOG. NOW, DOES IT MEAN ALL OF THEM ARE LIKE THAT? BUT WE HAVE TO BE AWARE THAT ANY DOG CAN DO THAT. ANY DOG, YOU KNOW, IT CAN BE A CHIHUAHUA. IT CAN BE ANY DOG BECAUSE THEY HAVE TEETH AND THEY WILL BITE. SO IT鈥橲 UP TO US TO MANAGE OUR ENVIRONMENT, TO KEEP THE DOG AND BABY SEPARATE. NOW, AS THE FAMILY IS DEALING WITH THIS HORRIBLE ACCIDENT, EMBER鈥橲 FAMILY WANTS TO MAKE SURE THIS DOESN鈥橳 HAPPEN TO ANYONE ELSE. THEY SAY FOLLOW SAFE SLEEP RULES. KEEP PETS AWAY FROM BABIES AND THEY ASK FOR PRAYERS AS THEY PLAN FOR THE FUNERAL OF THEIR YOUNGEST MEMBER. NOW, ALABASTER POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THIS CASE. THEY SAY THE PIT BULL IS NOW IN QUARANTINE WITH THE FAMILY鈥橲 VET. NO WORD ON WHAT鈥橲 GOING TO HAPPEN TO THE DOG. AND AGAIN, THE CASE IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. WE鈥橰E GOING TO KEEP YOU UPDATED ON THAT. LI
