Birmingham Civil Rights Institute honors 'African Americans and Labor' during Black History Month
The theme for Black History Month is "African Americans and Labor" as designated by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is honoring this theme with several events geared toward learning the history of African Americans and their labor in Birmingham and around the country.
"Black history is Alabama history. It is American history. It is world history. We are all one community together. And all of the, stories and contributions, are a part of all of our lives," said Tiffani Saxton, the Vice President of Strategy and Engagement at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.
Events such as a luncheon to provide resources for jobs, opportunities for entrepreneurs to network and a gallery to showcase the history of how Birmingham was built will be held.
Listen to Dr. Jesse J. Lewis Sr. reflects on his legacy after turning 100 below.
"We are, you know, in a unique time where we're seeing it is a difficult opportunity for some to continue to engage in these opportunities. So not all the spaces and places that may have been celebrating before are doing so this year. So, we...we believe that, you know, instead of leaning back, of course, it is imperative that we lean forward, that we lean in, that we make sure that we provide the opportunities that we know many of us are seeking," said Saxton.
Events will conclude on February 27. The full list of BCRI events can be found .
