Birmingham Civil Rights Institute honors 'African Americans and Labor' during Black History Month
THANKS SO MUCH, TAYLOR. WELL, A BIG MONTH AT THE BIRMINGHAM BIRMINGHAM THE BIRMINGHAM CIVIL RIGHTS INSTITUTE AS THEY CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH. THIS YEAR鈥橲 FOCUS FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH IS AFRICAN AMERICANS AND LABOR. 米兰体育 13 S MYA CALEB REPORTS ON HOW THE INSTITUTE IS EMPHASIZING THE THEME. THE BIRMINGHAM CIVIL RIGHTS INSTITUTE HAS PLANNED EVENTS FOR THIS MONTH TO SPARK CONVERSATION ON THE INGENUITY, WORK AND LABOR OF AFRICAN AMERICANS THROUGHOUT HISTORY, WHETHER THAT BE LOCAL OR AROUND THE COUNTRY. A GALLERY SHOWCASING THE HISTORY OF HOW BIRMINGHAM WAS BUILT INDUSTRIALLY, AS WELL AS CONVERSATION ON THE HISTORY OF LABOR IN BIRMINGHAM, ARE JUST A FEW WAYS THE BCRI IS ADHERING TO THIS MONTH鈥橲 THEME. BLACK HISTORY IS ALABAMA HISTORY. IT IS AMERICAN HISTORY. IT IS WORLD HISTORY. WE ARE ALL ONE COMMUNITY TOGETHER, AND ALL OF THE STORIES AND CONTRIBUTIONS ARE A PART OF ALL OF OUR LIVES. TODAY鈥橲 EVENT IS CENTERED AROUND PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENTREPRENEURS AND SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS TO NETWORK. LATER THIS MONTH, THERE WILL BE A LUNCHEON WITH THOSE THAT ARE IN POSITION TO PROVIDE JOBS. THE BCRI SAYS ITS GOAL IS TO EDUCATE AND SHOW HOW BLACK HISTORY IN AFRICAN AMERICAN LABOR HAS AN IMPACT ON ALL PEOPLE. WE ARE, YOU KNOW, IN A UNIQUE TIME WHERE WE鈥橰E SEEING IT IS A DIFFICULT OPPORTUNITY FOR SOME TO CONTINUE TO ENGAGE IN THESE OPPORTUNITIES. SO NOT ALL THE SPACES AND PLACES THAT MAY HAVE BEEN CELEBRATING BEFORE ARE DOING SO THIS YEAR. SO WE WE BELIEVE THAT, YOU KNOW, INSTEAD OF LEANING BACK, OF COURSE, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT WE LEAN FORWARD, THAT WE LEAN IN, THAT WE MAKE SURE THAT WE PROVIDE THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT WE KNOW. MANY OF US ARE SEEKING IN THE BCRI WILL CONCLUDE ITS EVENTS FOR THE MONTH WITH THAT LUNCHEON ON THE 27T

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute honors 'African Americans and Labor' during Black History Month
The theme for Black History Month is "African Americans and Labor" as designated by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is honoring this theme with several events geared toward learning the history of African Americans and their labor in Birmingham and around the country."Black history is Alabama history. It is American history. It is world history. We are all one community together. And all of the, stories and contributions, are a part of all of our lives," said Tiffani Saxton, the Vice President of Strategy and Engagement at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.Events such as a luncheon to provide resources for jobs, opportunities for entrepreneurs to network and a gallery to showcase the history of how Birmingham was built will be held.Listen to Dr. Jesse J. Lewis Sr. reflects on his legacy after turning 100 below."We are, you know, in a unique time where we're seeing it is a difficult opportunity for some to continue to engage in these opportunities. So not all the spaces and places that may have been celebrating before are doing so this year. So, we...we believe that, you know, instead of leaning back, of course, it is imperative that we lean forward, that we lean in, that we make sure that we provide the opportunities that we know many of us are seeking," said Saxton.Events will conclude on February 27.
