Wendy and Brian Barze share personal journey to chairing the Birmingham Heart Ball
FOR THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION OVER THE YEARS. SHERI AND I HAVE THE PRIVILEGE TOMORROW NIGHT, AND THE EVENT HAS RAISED MILLIONS FOR THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION OVER THE YEARS. CHARI AND I HAVE THE PRIVILEGE OF EMCEEING THE EVENT AGAIN. YES, AND THIS YEAR鈥橲 BALL IS CHAIRED BY WENDY AND BRIAN BARNES. 米兰体育 13 SARAH KILLIAN SAT DOWN WITH THE COUPLE AND SHARES HOW THEIR OWN JOURNEY TO HEART HEALTH LED TO THEIR LEADERSHIP IN THE HEART BALL. WENDY AND BRIAN BARRS HAVE BEEN ADVOCATES FOR HEART HEALTH FOR YEARS. IT鈥橲 A CAUSE THAT鈥橲 VERY PERSONAL TO THEIR FAMILY. IT ALL STARTED WITH THEIR SECOND BORN SON, JAY, WHEN HE WAS EIGHT DAYS OLD. HE WAS SORT OF RUSHED TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM AND RESPIRATORY FAILURE. IT TURNED OUT THAT JAY HAD A COARCTATION OF HIS AORTA, WHICH BASICALLY MEANS THAT YOUR AORTA IS SORT OF CRIMPED LIKE A STRAW IN HALF. NEWBORN JAY DESPERATELY NEEDED OPEN HEART SURGERY. WENDY AND BRIAN HAD TO ACT FAST. WE DID OUR RESEARCH. WE DID OUR HOMEWORK. WE TALKED TO DOCTORS AND FRIENDS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, AND WE LOOKED AT GOING TO CLEVELAND. WE LOOKED AT GOING TO BOSTON, MIAMI, SOME OF THE BEST CARDIOTHORACIC PEDIATRIC SURGEONS, AND EVERYBODY WE TALKED TO SAID, YOU DON鈥橳 NEED TO GO ANYWHERE. YOU鈥橰E IN BIRMINGHAM, YOU鈥橰E IN THE BEST PLACE. STAY HOME. YOU鈥橰E GOING TO GET THE BEST CARE IN BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA, IN THE CARE OF SOME OF THE BEST DOCTORS. LITTLE JAY鈥橲 OPEN HEART SURGERY WAS A SUCCESS, BUT IT WASN鈥橳 LONG BEFORE THE BARNES HOUSE WAS HIT WITH ANOTHER HEART ISSUE. JUST TWO YEARS LATER, BRIAN HAD PROBLEMS OF HIS OWN. I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH SOMETHING CALLED ATRIAL SEPTAL DEFECT, WHICH IS A HOLE BETWEEN YOUR TWO UPPER CHAMBERS OF YOUR HEART. SO AT 35 YEARS OLD, I HAD OPEN HEART SURGERY. IT WENT WITHOUT A GLITCH AND IT HAS BEEN VERY SUCCESSFUL. MORE THAN 20 YEARS LATER, BRIAN AND SON JAY ARE STILL HEALTHY AND THRIVING, BUT THEIR STRUGGLES ARE NEVER FORGOTTEN. THAT鈥橲 WHY FOR YEARS, THE COUPLE HAS GENEROUSLY GIVEN THEIR TIME AND MONEY TO THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION. WE鈥橰E SO EXCITED TO BE CHAIRING THE HEART BALL, TO TO GIVE BACK AND TO RAISE MONEY AND AWARENESS AND AND REALLY PROMOTE WHAT THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION HAS DONE FOR PEOPLE LIKE US THIS YEAR, WENDY AND BRIAN ARE TAKING THEIR ADVOCACY TO THE NEXT LEVEL. THEY鈥橰E CHAIRING THE BIRMINGHAM HEART BALL, AN EVENT THAT鈥橲 RAISED MILLIONS FOR THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION OVER THE YEARS. IT鈥橲 A HUGE UNDERTAKING. THEY HAVE A REALLY LARGE FINANCIAL GOAL, WHICH IS IMPORTANT TO REACH, BECAUSE WHEN WE REACH THAT GOAL, THEY鈥橰E ABLE TO DO ALL THE THINGS THAT THEY INTEND TO DO. THINGS LIKE PROVIDING DEFIBRILLATORS FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS, OFFERING TRAINING ON LIFESAVING AIDS LIKE CPR, AND FUNDING RESEARCH IN THE LOCAL CARDIOLOGY COMMUNITY. IF YOU LOOK AT WHAT BIRMINGHAM AND THE COMMUNITY HAS GIVEN TO THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION OVER THE YEARS, WHAT GETS RETURNED TO BIRMINGHAM IN THE COMMUNITY FROM THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION IS ABOUT THREE TIMES WHAT IS DONATED LOCALLY. ADVOCATING FOR A WORTHY CAUSE AND FOR WENDY AND BRIAN. IT鈥橲 ALSO ABOUT SHOWING APPRECIATION TO THE CARDIOLOGY COMMUNITY IN BIRMINGHAM, A COMMUNITY THAT鈥橲 MEANT SO MUCH TO THE BARRS FAMILY. AT THE END OF THE DAY, ALL YOU WANT TO DO IS SEEK OUT THE BEST CARE, THE BEST TREATMENT, THE BEST PROFESSIONALS, THE BEST DOCTORS. AND WE HAVE THAT HERE LOCALLY, WHICH IS AMAZING. THE BIRMINGHAM HEART BALL AGAIN TOMORROW NIGHT A
