Severe Birmingham police understaffing problem prompts strong reaction
More than a decade ago, we reported on how Birmingham police were down about 100 officers.
The Fraternal Order of Police president at the time called it a critical crisis.
Now we've learned the city has about half as many boots on the ground to fight crime.
鈥淭his is almost a state of emergency and let me tell you why. We have so many crimes that go unsolved. We have so many crimes that could have been avoided,鈥 Rep. Juandalyn Givan said.
Wednesday, a city councilor confirmed Birmingham had only about 430 of its budgeted 725 officers.
As the homicide rate continues to skyrocket, veteran officers said the city needs to do more beef up the ranks to curb the crime.
鈥淲e're facing a war. We're actually at war, and until they understand that, you have to put your men and women on the front line in order to stop this until we get reserves up,鈥 Officer Lawrence Billups said.
One 17-year veteran said the morale is at an all-time low and getting worse every day.
That has prompted more officers to retire or transfer.
Two sources claimed if the number of officers drops much lower, the city might even have to request the Governor to activate the National Guard to help keep the peace.
Givan hopes the city finds a way to fill in the staffing gaps to help neighborhoods feel safer.
