'We want people to learn about the animals that are here': Birmingham Zoo opens cougar exhibit
WELL, THE BIRMINGHAM ZOO IS MAKING A BIT. MARKING A BIG MILESTONE THIS YEAR, AND THEY ARE KICKING OFF 70 YEARS BY WELCOMING A NEW ADDITION. THE ZOO IS OPENING A NEW EXHIBIT TODAY WHERE YOU CAN SEE A COUGAR CUB AND TWO BOBCATS. MYA CALEB REPORTS FROM THE ZOO ON THAT NEW ADDITION AND HOW THIS EXHIBIT IS EDUCATING VISITORS. IN ADDITION TO THE COUGAR CUB AND TWO BOBCATS THAT ARE ALREADY HERE. ANOTHER COUGAR CUB WILL BE MAKING ITS WAY TO THE BIRMINGHAM ZOO IN TWO WEEKS. THE COUGAR CUB, CURRENTLY IN BIRMINGHAM, AS WELL AS THE TWO BOBCATS, WERE ORPHANED AND WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SURVIVE ON THEIR OWN, ACCORDING TO THE ZOO. THE COUGAR FOUND CAUGHT IN A FENCE IN MONTANA AND THE BOBCATS ABANDONED IN CALIFORNIA. THE BIRMINGHAM ZOO IS EXCITED TO GIVE VISITORS A CHANCE TO SEE ANIMALS THAT CAN ALSO BE FOUND HERE. AMONG ALABAMA WILDLIFE. WE HAVE BEARS, WE HAVE GOLDEN EAGLES, WE HAVE TURKEYS RIGHT THERE GOBBLING MAD AT YOU. SO WE WANT PEOPLE TO LEARN ABOUT THE ANIMALS THAT ARE HERE. YES, WE HAVE GIRAFFES AND ELEPHANTS AND ALL OF THAT AS WELL, WHICH ARE FANTASTIC. BUT WE WANT THEM TO LEARN ABOUT THE BIODIVERSITY AND ALL THE WONDERFUL THINGS HAPPENING HERE IN ALABAMA. WHEN VISITING THE ZOO, YOU MAY NOT SEE THE COUGAR AND BOBCATS FOR A LITTLE WHILE AS THEY GET ADJUSTED TO THEIR NEW ENVIRONMENT. THE WORD COUGAR CROSSING IS A PERMANENT EXHIBIT IN THE ZOO. IS ANTICIPATING THE COUGAR CUBS WILL LIVE LONG LIVES IN THE CROSSING. BOTH THE COUGAR AND BOBCATS ARE NEW HERE, AND THE COUGAR CAME FROM THE WILD. SHE鈥橲 JUST NOT USED TO BEING AROUND HUMANS. IT鈥橲 REALLY HARD TO TELL WHEN THEY鈥橰E GOING TO GET USED TO IT, BUT I HAVE TO SAY, EVERY DAY OUR KEEPER STAFF ARE MAKING STRIDES WITH THESE ANIMALS. THEY鈥橰E CREATING THAT RELATIONSHIP SO THAT THEY鈥橰E ABLE TO CARE FOR THEM, GET THEM TO USE THEIR EXHIBIT, MOVE AROUND AND DO THE THINGS THAT THAT BOBCATS AND COUGARS DO. NOW, THE COUGAR CUB THAT鈥橲 CURRENTLY HERE DOES NOT HAVE A NAME. AND FROM NOW UNTIL APRIL 1ST, YOU CAN VOTE FOR THAT NAME FOR JUST A DOLLA

The Wojciechowski Cougar Crossing opened this week at the Birmingham Zoo with a cougar cub and two bobcats.Another cougar cub will be making its way to the cougar crossing in two weeks.The cougar cub and bobcats were strays that would not have been able to survive on their own, according to the zoo.The cub was found caught in a fence in Montana, and the bobcats found abandoned in California."Both the cougar and bobcats are new here, and the cougar came from the wild. She's not used to being around humans. It's really hard to tell when they're going to get used to it, but I have to say, every day our keeper staff are making strides with these animals. They're creating that relationship so that they're able to care for them, get them to use their exhibit, move around and do the things that, that bobcats and cougars do," said Chris Pfefferkorn, the president and CEO of the Birmingham Zoo.The exhibit will give visitors a chance to see some of the wildlife that exists in their state up close."We have bears, we have golden eagles, we have turkeys right there gobbling at you. So, we want people to learn about the animals that are here. Yes, we have drafted elephants and all of that as well, which are fantastic. But we want them to learn about the biodiversity and all the wonderful things happening here in Alabama," said Bill Lang, the director of marketing and events for the Birmingham Zoo.There's a contest to name the cub at the zoo.
