'Brings some magic to the Magic City': The legacy of Legion Field
Legion Field, the home of the Magic City Classic, has played host to countless moments of triumph, heartbreak and unity for nearly a century.
Historically called the Old Gray Lady, it has served as hallowed ground for thousands of sports fans and those who've played here.
Since opening in 1927, the historic venue has hosted numerous significant events outside of the Classic, including Alabama Crimson Tide games, the annual Iron Bowl rivalry, and even several soccer matches during the 1996 Summer Olympics.
"Legion Field has held down many events, not only football. We host concerts, we've hosted festivals," said Shonae Eddins Bennett, Birmingham Parks and Recreation director.
Although the nearly century-old venue isn't what it used to be, Eddins-Bennett says it remains a symbol of pride and tradition for the community.
"This will be the 83rd Magic City Classic. So that speaks volumes within itself to come back 83 times," she said.
City Councilwoman Crystal Smitherman, who grew up on Birmingham's west side, has many fond memories of attending events at the stadium.
"I do think that Legion Field brings some magic to the Magic City. It's such a great place," she said.
She says she would like to see the stadium continue to play a role in bringing people together from all walks of life.
"I really would love to see this preserved, but to be like a multi-sport stadium where we can incorporate football, soccer, anything you can think of, where kids can come here and really be able to train and fall in love with Legion Field the way I have," she said.
Recent renovations have improved the stadium's lights, skyboxes, and concession stands.
Eddins-Bennett mentioned that there are plans for even more upgrades as they prepare for its 100th anniversary.
"Our mayor's office and our board is constantly working with us on improvements to this stadium, and we are very appreciative of them for providing funding for the stadium," Eddins-Bennett said.
"We love Legion Field," said Smitherman on behalf of the entire City Council. "We know the importance of it. I do believe the 10 of us will continue to advocate for Legion Field."
