Candlelight vigil honors life of Tony Mitchell
WE WE BELIEVE THAT THERE鈥橲 SOMETHING THAT CAN HAPPEN DIFFERENTLY HERE, THAT THE DIFFERENT WORLD IS POSSIBLE AND A DIFFERENT WALKER COUNTY IS POSSIBLE. THAT WAS THE MESSAGE FROM PROTESTERS LAST WEEKEND FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF A WALKER COUNTY INMATE. ANTHONY MITCHELL SPENT ALMOST TWO WEEKS IN THE COUNTY JAIL UNTIL HE DIED AT A NEARBY HOSPITAL. NOW THE CAUSE OF DEATH IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. CALLS FOR JUSTICE CONTINUED TONIGHT DURING A VIGIL. 米兰体育 13 CHIP SCARBOROUGH SPOKE TO THOSE WHO KNEW TONY MITCHELL, WHO SAY THEY鈥橰E NOT BACKING DOWN. PEOPLE LINED UP SIDE BY SIDE IN FRONT OF THE WALKER COUNTY JAIL TO PAY TRIBUTE TO TONY MITCHELL. HE DIED LATE LAST MONTH AFTER SPENDING NEARLY TWO WEEKS IN THE JAIL. IT鈥橲 HARDEST FOR HIS CLOSER FRIENDS AND THAT鈥橲 TO I FEEL WORSE FOR AND HIS FAMILY. SO I COUNTED ROUGHLY 70 TO 75 PEOPLE TAKING PART IN THE CANDLELIGHT VIGIL ON SATURDAY EVENING. THEY TELL ME THEY鈥橰E GOING TO KEEP PUSHING FORWARD FOR ANSWERS AS LONG AS IT TAKES TO FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED HERE. GOOD HEARTED GUY. I MEAN, HE WASN鈥橳 TRYING TO EVER, YOU KNOW, GO OUT OF HIS WAY TO HARM ANYONE. HE WAS JUST, YOU KNOW, FUN OLD GUY. VIDEO TAKEN ON JANUARY 25TH SHOWS WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE LIFELESS BODY OF TONY MITCHELL BEING MOVED. HIS BODY TEMPERATURE IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN JUST 72 DEGREES AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH. MITCHELL WAS IN JAIL AFTER AUTHORITIES SAY HE SHOT AT THEM DURING A WELFARE CHECK ON JANUARY 12. WE WANT THEM TO KNOW THAT THIS IS THE LAST TIME THAT THERE鈥橲 GOING TO BE YOU KNOW, PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE SILENT. AT THE SAME TIME, KEEPING THEIR MESSAGE PEACEFUL BECAUSE THEY SAY THEY KNOW IT鈥橲 WHAT TONY MITCHELL WOULD HAVE WANTED, BECAUSE WE FEEL LIKE WE鈥橰E NOT GOING TO GET ANY MESSAGE ACROSS IF WE鈥橰E IF WE鈥橰E BEING OUT HERE VIOLENT OR THREATENING OR, YOU KNOW, WE WANT TO REMAIN PEACEFUL BECAUSE TONY WAS A PEACEFUL GUY AND THEY SAY THEY PLAN TO MAINTAIN PEACE AS THEY SEEK JUSTICE. THE FBI IS NOW LOOKING INTO EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED INSIDE OF THE JAIL IN WALKER COUNTY, CHIP

People lined up side-by-side in front of the Walker County Jail to pay tribute to Tony Mitchell. He died in late January after spending nearly two weeks in the jail. "It's hardest for his closer friends and that's who I feel worst for," friend Dillon McIntyre says. Participants say they're going to keep pushing forward for answers, as long as it takes to find out exactly what happened prior to Mitchell's death."Just a good-hearted guy," friend Austin Banks said. "I mean, you know, he wasn't ever trying to go out of his way to harm anyone. And he was just a fun ole guy."Video taken on January 25th shows what appears to be the lifeless body of Tony Mitchell being moved. His body temperature was said to have been just 72 degrees at the time of his death. Mitchell was in jail after authorities say he shot at them during a welfare check on January 12th."We want them to know that this time is going to be the last time that it's you know, that people are going to be silent," McIntyre adds. At the same time, keeping their message peaceful because they say they know it's what Tony Mitchell would have wanted. "Because we feel like we're not going to get any message across if we're out here being violent or threatening," Banks explains. "Or you know, we want to remain peaceful because Tony was a peaceful guy."The FBI is now investigating the case.
