Candlelight vigil honors life of Tony Mitchell
People lined up side-by-side in front of the Walker County Jail to pay tribute to Tony Mitchell. He died in late January after spending nearly two weeks in the jail.
"It's hardest for his closer friends and that's who I feel worst for," friend Dillon McIntyre says. "And his family."
米兰体育 13 counted roughly 70 to 75 people taking part in the candlelight vigil on Saturday evening. Participants say they're going to keep pushing forward for answers, as long as it takes to find out exactly what happened prior to Mitchell's death.
"Just a good-hearted guy," friend Austin Banks said. "I mean, you know, he wasn't ever trying to go out of his way to harm anyone. And he was just a fun ole guy."
Video taken on January 25th shows what appears to be the lifeless body of Tony Mitchell being moved. His body temperature was said to have been just 72 degrees at the time of his death. Mitchell was in jail after authorities say he shot at them during a welfare check on January 12th.
"We want them to know that this time is going to be the last time that it's you know, that people are going to be silent," McIntyre adds.
At the same time, keeping their message peaceful because they say they know it's what Tony Mitchell would have wanted.
"Because we feel like we're not going to get any message across if we're out here being violent or threatening," Banks explains. "Or you know, we want to remain peaceful because Tony was a peaceful guy."
The FBI is now investigating the case.
