82-year-old Colorado woman dies after firebomb attack at Boulder demonstration
This is People versus Mohamed Soleiman. Mohamed Soleiman, last seen in public at *** peaceful gathering on Pearl Street, now standing before *** judge accused of trying to kill the people who attended. 118 charges were filed in *** hearing that lasted 3 minutes, 118 state charges became official. If the defendant's convicted and those counts run or those sentences run consecutive, that would be 48 years in state prison for each of the 14 victims. Which comes to 672 years. Boulder Democratic District Attorney Michael Dougherty said those charges included attempted first degree murder, assault on at-risk individuals, and use of explosive or incendiary devices. The charges reflect the evidence that we have regarding this horrific attack that took place and the seriousness of it. Along with federal charges, he's an Egyptian national facing *** pending deportation case, but Dougherty says he won't let that get in the way. I am absolutely committed to making sure the defendant is fully prosecuted. So obviously making sure he remains in the country is *** top priority so that he could be fully prosecuted and held fully responsible, determined to do right by the 15 victims and dog impacted by this, for the victims in this case, for their families, for the members of the Jewish community, and for all the members of this great state that we stand together at *** time where it's really needed *** time of crisis and *** time of pain and trauma.

Mohamed Sabry Soliman was indicted last week on 12 hate crime counts in the June 1 attack in downtown Boulder. He is accused of trying to kill the eight people who were hurt when he threw Molotov cocktails 鈥 bottles filled with flammable liquid that are ignited 鈥 as well as other people nearby.

Soliman鈥檚 attorney, David Kraut, entered the not guilty plea on Soliman鈥檚 behalf during a hearing Friday. Soliman was being represented by public defenders who do not comment on their cases to news media.

Investigators say Soliman told them he intended to kill the roughly 20 participants at the weekly demonstration on Boulder鈥檚 Pearl Street pedestrian mall. But he threw just two of his over two dozen Molotov cocktails while yelling 鈥淔ree Palestine.鈥

Soliman, who is also being prosecuted in state court for attempted murder and other charges, told investigators he tried to buy a gun but was not able to because he was not a 鈥渓egal citizen.鈥

Soliman did not speak during the hearing last week, and he listened to translations provided by an Arabic interpreter through headphones.

The Egyptian national has been living in the U.S. illegally with his family, according to federal authorities.

Soliman posed as a gardener and wore a construction vest to get close to the group before launching the attack, prosecutors allege.

Prosecutors say the victims were targeted because of their perceived or actual national origin. An attack motivated by someone鈥檚 political views is not considered a hate crime under federal law.
