Community Food Bank of Central Alabama breaks ground on new facility in Bessemer
By next spring, the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama hopes to be serving those in need out of a new facility.
The food bank broke ground on the facility Thursday morning. It will be on Turin Drive in Bessemer.
"This new facility means that we'll be able to feed more of our neighbors who experience food insecurity, and that's our mission, that's why we are here," said Nicole Williams, Chief Executive Officer of the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama.
This organization supports 12 counties in Central Alabama. They supply millions of meals annually to more than 200 community partners. These include food pantries, shelters and children's programs.
Williams is hopeful this new build will increase the amount of food they're getting out into the community, something she said everyone can play a role in.
"We need donors, we need volunteers, we host volunteers in our warehouse every day to help build food boxes and things like that," Williams said.
Currently, the food bank feeds more than 145,000 people every month.
