Hi, I'm Jack Hubly, and this is my old pal trusty. Welcome to *** wild moment. We're hanging out by the stream today because streams are great places to see wildlife, and one of the critters you're likely to see here is the mallard duck. Today we'll visit with *** family of mallards that's leaving home for the very first time, and as kids everywhere sooner or later find out that first step away from home can be *** big one. The guests at Greystone Manor Bed and Breakfast really enjoyed watching Mama Mallard hatch her new family, but mallards normally nest on the ground. How would she get her brood down to earth safely? The next morning they got their answer. At 8:30, she announced it was time to leave and told the kids to follow from the ground, she continued talking them down. Finally, only one remained, but mom wasn't about to leave without him. Oh, that's enough to make *** guy swear off bunk beds. As rough as it seemed, that first big step was only the beginning of *** long journey to the creek more than *** quarter of *** mile away. The next big hurdle was *** busy highway. Fortunately, the bed and breakfast provided *** crossing guard, but when it came time to cross *** plowed field and hike *** rocky railroad line, the family was on its own. Finally, an hour and *** half later, Mom and her brood of 16 arrived safely at *** small woodland stream. Now take *** moment to put yourself in duck shoes. Start the day with *** free fall from the bedroom window. Then jog across *** freshly plowed mountain range, thrash your way through the jungle, and finally, Home at last. Mighty mites, those baby ducks.
