Editorial: Improving the election process
TRANSITION, LET鈥橲 FOCUS ON IMPROVING THE ELECTION PROCESS RATHER THAN DWELLING ON WHETHER A CANDIDATE WON OR LOST. DESPITE LONG LINES AT POLLING PLACES, IT鈥橲 CONCERNING THAT 40% OF ALABAMIANS DID NOT VOTE, MARKING THE LOWEST TURNOUT IN 30 YEARS. A SERIOUS SOLUTION TO CONSIDER IS JOINING THE 47 STATES THAT ALLOW EARLY VOTING. ADDITIONALLY, ALLOWING YOUNG VOTERS TO PRE- REGISTER WHEN THEY GET THEIR DRIVER鈥橲 LICENSE WOULD ENSURE THEY ARE READY TO VOTE AT 18. WE ALSO NEED MORE PEOPLE RUNNING FOR PUBLIC OFFICE. IN JEFFERSON COUNTY ALONE THERE WERE MORE THAN 40 UNCONTESTED RACES. REVIEWING POTENTIAL BARRIERS FOR NEW CANDIDATES, SUCH AS SIGNATURE AND FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS, IS ESSENTIAL. WITH THE NEXT ELECTION CYCLE JUST A FEW MONTHS AWAY, THESE CHANGES COULD MAKE IMPACT AT THE POLLS.
