Girls On The Run helps build confidence, self-esteem through exercise
A program that aims to help girls鈥� build confidence and self-esteem through running hosted its annual 5K at the Cumberland Fairgrounds Sunday.
Girls on the Run is a nonprofit that teaches girls life skills and a lifelong appreciation for health and fitness. They take part in a 10-week program that culminates in a service project that helps their communities.
The 5K is a celebration of all their hard work and the beginning of a lifetime of healthy activity.
According to Girls on the Run, girls鈥� confidence drops twice as much as boys鈥� by adolescence. The organization wants to combat that by helping girls realize their potential and become leaders.
In their lessons, the girls learn about the organization鈥檚 5 Cs: confidence, character, care, connections and competence.
Girls on the Run was established in 1996 and came to Maine in 2012. It has grown rapidly since then.
