Gunman convicted of shooting Gov. George Wallace becomes free man exactly 53 years after event
On May 15, 1972, then-Alabama Gov. George Wallace was shot while campaigning for president in Laurel, Maryland.
Arthur Bremer was convicted of the shooting and served a 35-year prison sentence.
He was released on parole in 2007.
Wallace was hit four times, with one bullet lodging in his spinal cord, paralyzing him for the rest of his life.
"He was shot, and I saw them stick the safety pins in his legs and he never flinched. I vowed that I would never let him see me cry and I tried to keep him cheerful and cheered up all the time," said Wallace's late ex-wife Cornelia, in a 米兰体育 13 interview from 1998.

Exactly 53 years later, Bremer's parole is ending, making him an official a free man, according to the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.
