'It's gone': Henagar family hides in shelter while tornado shreds home outside
Wanda White's home was one of two-to-three dozen damaged in the Henagar community Wednesday.
The winds blew their mobile home off its foundation, shredding it to pieces.
The Whites sat in their storm shelter for 10 hours during multiple tornado warnings that hit Dekalb County overnight.
When they walked out Thursday morning, their home was scattered over their property.
鈥淚 saw nothing. And what I thought, it鈥檚 gone. But we鈥檙e still here,鈥 White said.
A flipped backhoe was buried in debris, and lumber punctured car windows.
Just down from the Whites on Lacy Road, the Womacks were hit, too.
The family's 40-year-old barn was obliterated.
Plus, a tree crashed into their house and totaled three of their vehicles while they huddled in the living room and prayed.
鈥淚 was freaked out. I was shaking and crying. Storms normally don't bother me, but this one freaked me out,鈥 Shannon Womack said.
Wanda White claimed they lived through a different tornado that hit this community on April 27, 2011, when she lived down the road.
鈥淲e were fine. I mean, it blew the top of the house off. All the trees. And the house shook,鈥 White said.
So, before she moved onto her current property, she had the storm shelter installed.
Without it, she does not believe she would be alive today.
鈥淣o, and I don鈥檛 think like you could have found me. No, I wouldn鈥檛 have ever talked to anybody,鈥 White said.
