13 On The Road: From Paralyzed to Purpose 鈥 The Man Behind IS-ABLE
Sometimes, the only thing between 鈥渂roken鈥 and 鈥渂ecoming鈥 is two letters.
That鈥檚 where the name "" was born.
This week on 13 On The Road, Brittany Decker visits Homewood, where a dart thrown at a map landed on a story rooted in pain, but growing in purpose.

The journey begins beside a swimming pool, not in a classroom or a boardroom. That鈥檚 where two quadriplegic men鈥攑aralyzed in body and spirit鈥攐nce planned to end their lives.
But on the day they planned to die, something shifted.
鈥淲e had to pass by that swimming pool we were just minutes from drowning in鈥 to get to the library,鈥 said Lorenzo Brown, Executive Director of the IS-ABLE Center.
They kept rolling.
And in that library, without a plan but with conviction, they found their calling. A whisper of purpose. A name.
鈥淓veryone thinks it鈥檚 Isabelle,鈥 Brown said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e spelling it IS-ABLE.鈥
The road to that moment was paved in pain. At just 17, Brown was caught in street violence鈥攁 drive-by shooting left him paralyzed.
鈥淵ou鈥檙e going to be paralyzed for the rest of your life,鈥 the doctor told him. 鈥淵ou鈥檒l have no quality of life ever again.鈥
He was told to give up. His parents were advised to pull the plug. But his mother refused鈥攁nd so did he.
Years of living in nursing homes and shelters followed.
鈥淚t was like my life was wasting away鈥 all I could do was cry,鈥 he said.
Then, one question from a nursing instructor changed everything:
鈥淲hat are you going to do about getting out of here?鈥
It sparked a shift. Brown began to build what didn鈥檛 yet exist鈥攁 place for people like him. The IS-ABLE Center offers adaptive technology, job training, social programs, and above all, hope.
鈥淚 finally received the job,鈥 said one participant. 鈥淚 had a good support team. IS-ABLE Center helped me get here.鈥

Now, Brown mentors young men facing the same crossroads he once did.
鈥淕ang activity, selling drugs,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 try to relay to them鈥攃hoices and consequences come from it.鈥
From a life labeled 鈥渄isabled,鈥 Brown created something more: A movement called "IS-ABLE."
