13 On The Road: From Paralyzed to Purpose 鈥 The Man Behind IS-ABLE
LET鈥橲 GO. ALL RIGHT. HOMEWOOD, WE鈥橰E COMING FOR YOU. HERE IN HOMEWOOD, I INTRODUCE YOU TO A MAN WHO WAS SHOT, PARALYZED, AND WRITTEN OFF UNTIL HE REWROTE THE STORY. SOMETIMES THE ONLY THING BETWEEN BROKEN AND BECOMING IS TWO LETTERS. THAT鈥橲 HOW THE NAME ISABEL WAS BORN. IT WILL TAKE THE DEEDS OUT OF DISABLED. WE鈥橰E GOING TO NAME OUR ORGANIZATION ISABEL. NOT IN A CLASSROOM, NOT IN A BOARDROOM, BUT BESIDE A SWIMMING POOL WHERE TWO QUADRIPLEGIC MEN, PARALYZED IN BOTH BODY AND SPIRIT. WE WERE SO DEPRESSED. WE鈥橰E READY TO END IT ALL. WE SAID WE WAS GOING TO BLOW OUR BRAINS OUT, BUT NEITHER ONE OF US COULD PICK UP THE GUN OR PULL THE TRIGGER. WE SAID WE WAS GOING TO CUT OUR WRISTS. WE COULDN鈥橳 PICK UP THE RAZOR BLADE. WE CAN ROLL OUR WHEELCHAIRS INTO THE DEEP END OF THE SWIMMING POOL AND DROWN OURSELVES HALFWAY THERE, SOMETHING SPARKED. THEY TURNED FROM THE EDGE AND KEPT ROLLING. HERE鈥橲 THE POWERFUL THING. WE HAD TO PASS BY THAT SWIMMING POOL THAT WE WAS JUST MINUTES AWAY FROM DROWNING OURSELVES IN TO GET TO THE LIBRARY FOR MILES. NO PLAN. JUST CONVICTION. A CHOICE NOT TO DIE, BUT TO BE HEARD. THEIR GOD WHISPERED, THEIR NEWFOUND NONPROFIT鈥橲 NAME. HOW ARE WE GOING TO SPELL IT? EVERYBODY GOING TO THINK IT鈥橲 ISABEL? I SAID, WE鈥橰E GOING TO SPELL IT CAPITAL. I DASH CAPITAL A. B L E, HE SAID, WHOA! BUT THE ROAD TO THAT MOMENT WAS PAVED IN PAIN. AT 17, LORENZO BROWN WAS CAUGHT IN THE CHAOS OF THE STREETS. ONE MOMENT OF CONFLICT OVER A HAT. AN HOUR AND A HALF LATER, A DRIVE BY SHOOTING. HE SAID, YOU鈥橰E PARALYZED. PARALYZED? FOR HOW LONG? I ASKED, AND HE REPLIED AND SAID THESE EXACT WORDS. HE SAID, I鈥橫 AFRAID YOU鈥橰E GOING TO BE PARALYZED FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE ANY QUALITY OF LIFE EVER AGAIN. THE DOCTOR鈥橲 WORDS DIDN鈥橳 STOP THERE. HE TOLD HIS PARENTS TO PULL THE PLUG ON HIS LIFE, BUT HIS MOM, DESPITE BATTLING ADDICTION, REFUSED. WHAT THE WORLD CALLED A LIFE SENTENCE. LORENZO TURNED INTO A CALLING. YEARS IN NURSING HOMES HOPELESS. IT WAS LIKE MY LIFE WAS JUST WASTING AWAY. ALL I COULD DO WAS JUST CRY UNTIL A QUESTION FROM A NURSING INSTRUCTOR, SHE ASKED, WELL, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO? I SAID, WHAT DO YOU MEAN? SHE SAID, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT GETTING OUT OF HERE? THAT THOUGHT HAD NEVER CROSSED MY MIND. I THOUGHT THAT I WAS GOING TO DIE IN THAT NURSING HOME. THAT VERY QUESTION CHANGED EVERYTHING. LORENZO BUILT WHAT DIDN鈥橳 EXIST, A SPACE FOR PEOPLE LIKE HIM WHERE LIMITATIONS DON鈥橳 DEFINE WORTH. ADAPTIVE TECH, JOB TRAINING, SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT, EMPOWERMENT. DID YOU THINK THIS DAY WOULD COME? HOW LONG? HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WAITING FOR AN OPPORTUNITY? ALMOST THREE YEARS. BUT I HAD A GOOD SUPPORT TEAM, WHICH WAS IS EVA CENTRE AND I FINALLY RECEIVED THE JOB. AND LORENZO, NOT JUST BUILDING PROGRAMS, HE鈥橲 MENTORING YOUNG MEN WALKING THE ROAD HE ONCE DID. I鈥橫 TALKING ABOUT GANG ACTIVITY. I鈥橫 TALKING ABOUT SELLING DRUGS. I鈥橫 REALLY TRYING TO RELATE TO THEM. YOU KNOW THAT THERE ARE CHOICES AND THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES THAT COME FROM FROM A LIFE LABELED DISABLED TO A MOVEMENT CALLED ISABEL ON THE ROAD IN HOMEWOOD BRITTANY DECKER, 米兰体育 13. The journey begins beside a swimming pool, not in a classroom or a boardroom. That鈥檚 where two quadriplegic men鈥攑aralyzed in body and spirit鈥攐nce planned to end their lives.

But on the day they planned to die, something shifted.

鈥淲e had to pass by that swimming pool we were just minutes from drowning in鈥 to get to the library,鈥 said Lorenzo Brown, Executive Director of the IS-ABLE Center.

They kept rolling.

And in that library, without a plan but with conviction, they found their calling. A whisper of purpose. A name.

鈥淓veryone thinks it鈥檚 Isabelle,鈥 Brown said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e spelling it IS-ABLE.鈥

The road to that moment was paved in pain. At just 17, Brown was caught in street violence鈥攁 drive-by shooting left him paralyzed.

鈥淵ou鈥檙e going to be paralyzed for the rest of your life,鈥 the doctor told him. 鈥淵ou鈥檒l have no quality of life ever again.鈥

He was told to give up. His parents were advised to pull the plug. But his mother refused鈥攁nd so did he.

Years of living in nursing homes and shelters followed.

鈥淚t was like my life was wasting away鈥 all I could do was cry,鈥 he said.

Then, one question from a nursing instructor changed everything:

鈥淲hat are you going to do about getting out of here?鈥

It sparked a shift. Brown began to build what didn鈥檛 yet exist鈥攁 place for people like him. The IS-ABLE Center offers adaptive technology, job training, social programs, and above all, hope.

鈥淚 finally received the job,鈥 said one participant. 鈥淚 had a good support team. IS-ABLE Center helped me get here.鈥

Now, Brown mentors young men facing the same crossroads he once did.

鈥淕ang activity, selling drugs,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 try to relay to them鈥攃hoices and consequences come from it.鈥

From a life labeled 鈥渄isabled,鈥 Brown created something more: A movement called "IS-ABLE."
