'I'm not afraid, I will report it': Community members speak-up to law enforcement during block meeting
JUST A FEW MINUTES. ALL RIGHT. TAYLOR. WELL, TONIGHT A CONTINUED PUSH FOR NEIGHBORHOOD SUPPORT IN FIGHTING AND REDUCING CRIME IN THE MAGIC CITY. CITY LEADERS AND CONCERNED RESIDENTS MET AT THE BIRMINGHAM POLICE WEST PRECINCT AND FIVE POINTS WEST FOR A NEIGHBORHOOD BLOCK WATCH DISCUSSION. THE GOAL TO CONNECT WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT TO DISCUSS PUBLIC SAFETY IDEAS. 米兰体育 13 S JARVIS ROBERTSON IN ATTENDANCE FOR THAT MEETING. WHAT ARE THEY HOPING TO IMPLEMENT? JARVIS. WELL, GUY, NO IMPLEMENTATIONS WERE MADE TONIGHT. THIS WAS A CHANCE FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO GATHER AND HEAR FROM THE OFFICERS IN THE WEST PRECINCT. JUST TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT THEY DO AND WHO EXACTLY THEY ARE. HOWEVER, OFFICIALS DO URGE MORE PEOPLE TO STEP UP AND START REPORTING CRIME. I AM NOT AFRAID I WILL REPORT IT. CYNTHIA MORTON IS NOT AFRAID TO SPEAK UP WHEN SHE SEES SOMETHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY HAPPENING. AT MONDAY EVENING鈥橲 WESTERN AREA BLOCK WATCH ASSOCIATION MEETING, SHE ENCOURAGED ALL COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO DO THE SAME. WE HAVE A LOT OF SENIORS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD, AND THAT鈥橲 WHAT I鈥橫 CONCERNED ABOUT. OUR SENIORS. IT鈥橲 AN OLD NEIGHBORHOOD, BUT THAT鈥橲 OKAY. WILLADEENE STREETER IS THE ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT. SHE ECHOES THE SENTIMENT. AND IF WE DO NOT GET A REACTION FROM SAYING SOMETHING, DO NOT STOP. GO TO YOUR CAPTAIN. AND THAT鈥橲 EXACTLY WHO COMMUNITY MEMBERS GOT A CHANCE TO HEAR FROM. CAPTAIN RAYMOND COCHRAN HAS BEEN IN CHARGE OF THE WEST PRECINCT SINCE NOVEMBER. HE SAYS THERE HAS BEEN SOME POSITIVE GAINS FOR THE WESTERN PART OF BIRMINGHAM. WHEN YOU COMPARE DATA YEAR TO YEAR, HOMICIDES ARE DOWN 11.7% IN THE WESTERN PRECINCT AREA. HE ALSO SAYS ROBBERIES ARE DOWN 32% AND CALLS FOR SHOTS FIRED ARE DOWN 15%. CAPTAIN COCHRAN WANTS THOSE WHO LIVE AROUND HIS PRECINCT TO HAVE A RAPPORT WITH THE DEPARTMENT. IF YOU DO HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS, PLEASE. IF IT鈥橲 WITHIN MY POWER, I鈥橪L MAKE SURE IT HAPPENS. I CAN RIDE AROUND, WAVE AT MY POLICE OFFICER IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD BECAUSE I WANT THEM TO KNOW ME. THAT鈥橲 WHY STREETER PRESSED THE NEED FOR THESE COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO LOOK AFTER EACH OTHER. OUR GOAL IS TO STOP PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY HAPPEN. WE SEE ABOUT EACH OTHER, AND I FEEL LIKE THAT鈥橲 MY RESPONSIBILITY TO SEE ABOUT THEM. NOW, THAT LAST PERSON YOU JUST HEARD FROM, SHE LIVES IN THE WEST PRINCETON NEIGHBORHOOD. NOW, HERE ARE SOME OF MY NOTES THAT I TOOK IN THE MEETING TODAY. WE ALSO HEARD FROM A SERGEANT WITH THE REAL TIME CRIME CENTER. THAT PERSON DID NOT GIVE TOO MANY DETAILS BECAUSE OUR CAMERA WAS THERE, AND THEY DID NOT WANT TO GIVE AWAY TOO MANY SECRETS. BUT WE DID HEAR HIM SAY THAT THE CITY HAS AROUND 2000 CAMERAS, THAT THEY HAVE ACCESS TO, SO THEY CAN SEE WHAT鈥橲 GOING ON AND SEE WHAT鈥橲 HAPPENING, ESPECIALLY AS IT RELATES TO CRIME. THEY ALSO ENCOURAGE MORE PEOPLE TO STEP UP AND ALLOW BPD TO HAVE ACCESS TO THEIR OUTDOOR CAMERAS. REPORTING LIVE IN BIRMINGHAM TONIGHT I鈥
