LITTLE BIT OF COFFEE. YEAH, WELL, ALL THIS MONTH, 米兰体育 13 PROJECT COMMUNITY IS RECOGNIZING ALABAMIANS WHO BROKE BARRIERS AND RAISED THE BAR FOR EVERYONE. ONE OF THOSE EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE, JOHN LEWIS, BORN IN 1940 TO SHARECROPPERS IN RURAL PIKE COUNTY, LEWIS GREW UP LISTENING TO DOCTOR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR ON THE RADIO, AND AT THE AGE OF 23, HE SERVED AS A KEYNOTE SPEAKER DURING THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON AND BECAME CHAIRMAN OF THE STUDENT NONVIOLENT COORDINATING COMMITTEE. HE NOTABLY LED THE 1965 SELMA TO MONTGOMERY MARCHES, INCLUDING ON MARCH 7TH WHEN ALABAMA STATE TROOPERS ATTACKED PEACEFUL PROTESTERS ON BLOODY SUNDAY. THE MARCHES HELPED THE PASSAGE OF THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT OF 1965. THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE, HE CHAMPIONED CIVIL RIGHTS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE, SERVING AS A GEORGIA U.S. CONGRESSMAN FOR OVER 30 YEARS. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA AWARDED HIM WITH THE MEDAL OF FREEDOM IN 2015. ON FEBRUARY 20TH. John Lewis was born to sharecroppers in Troy, Alabama, in 1940.He would listen to the broadcasts of Martin Luther King Jr. as a boy during the Montgomery Bus Boycott and in 1960, took part in his first sit-in.>> Lift every voice and sing with our full special about the unsung heroes of Black history.At the age of 23, he was a keynote speaker during the March on Washington and became chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.He led more than 600 peaceful protestors across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma to march for voting rights.
