Mark Carney to replace Trudeau as Canada's prime minister after winning Liberal Party vote
HOW THIS WILL AFFECT MAINE'S BORDER COMMUNITIES. MAINE BUSINESSES SEEM TO HAVE MIXED REVIEWS ON PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP'S TARIFFS -- SOME ARE CONCERNED ABOUT COSTS -- WHILE OTHERS SAY THIS IS SHORT TERM PAIN FOR A LONG TERM BENEFIT. "VERY, VERY SERIOUS DISSAPOINTMENT." 03;50;12;20 MANY MAINERS IN AROOSTOOK COUNTY SAY THEY'RE CONCERNED ABOUT THE IMPLICATIONS OF PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP'S TARIFFS. NAT??? OF SOMETHING?? WHAT DO WE HAVE?? THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA HAVEN'T HAD TARIFFS FOR CLOSE TO FOUR DECADES. IN THE FALL OF 1988 -- PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN SIGNED THE UNITED STATES- CANADA FREE-TRADE AGREEMENT IMPLEMENTATION ACT INTO LAW -- REMOVING TARIFFS BETWEEN THE TWO NATIONS. "LET THE 5,000-MILE BORDER BETWEEN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES STAND AS A SYMBOL FOR THE FUTURE. NO SOLDIER STANDS GUARD TO PROTECT IT. BARBED WIRE DOES NOT DEFACE IT. AND NO INVISIBLE BARRIER OF ECONOMIC SUSPICION AND FEAR WILL EXTEND IT. LET IT FOREVER BE NOT A POINT OF DIVISION BUT A MEETING PLACE BETWEEN OUR GREAT AND TRUE FRIENDS." 00;05;12;29 NOW THAT TARIFFS ARE BACK -- GREATER HOULTON CHAMBER OF COMMERICE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JANE TORRES SAYS THE CHAMBER'S MORE THAN 200 MEMBERS ARE WORRIED. "WE DO A LOT OF TRADE WITH THE CANDIANS AND THEY COME OVER HERE A LOT AND WE'RE ALREADY SEEING IT IN SOME OF THE STORES THAT THEY'RE NOT COMING HERE LIKE THEY USED TO." 04;12;53;03 ACCORDING TO THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE -- LAST YEAR THE STATE BROUGHT IN FOUR POINT FOUR BILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF PRODUCTS FROM CANADA. NOT ONLY THAT, BUT THE STATE'S CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION -- WITH THE EXCEPTION OF CONGRESSMAN JARED GOLDEN -- WROTE IN A LETTER TO COMMERCE SECRETARY HOWARD LUTNICK AND SAYS THE TRADE INDUSTRY SUPPORTS 60-THOUSAND MAINE JOBS. GOVERNOR JANET MILLS AGREES -- "MORE THAN 80 PERCENT OF OUR PATROLUM PRODUCTS AND SOME OF THEM COME THROUGH CANADA BUT FROM THE WEST COAST OF THE UNITED STATES SO IS IT FOREIGN OIL, IS IT CANADIAN OIL, IS IT AMERICAN OIL THAT'S TAKING A LONG TRIP AROUND? IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE TO IMPOSE TARIFFS ON THOSE PRODUCTS." 08;38;05;28 SOME SORT OF NAT? TORRES SAYS MANY BUSINESSES ARE ALREADY STRUGGLING -- AND DIDN'T EXPECT THE TARIFFS TO 谩ACTUALLY谩 IMPACT THEM. "WE ARE A RED COUNTY, YOU KNOW, VERY MUCH A REPUBLICAN COUNTY BUT WHEN IT STARTS TO AFFECT YOU AND IT STARTS TO AFFECT YOUR FAMILY." 04;22;56;17 SOME INDUSTRIES, THOUGH, SAY THEY SUPPORT PRESIDENT TRUMP'S TARIFFS AND THAT THIS WILL BE GOOD FOR BUSINESS, LONG TERM. "IT'S PROBBALY GOING TO HURT WORSE AND WORSE FOR ABOUT A YEAR, THEN IT'LL START TO GET BETTER." 04;30;51;28 THAT'S JASON CULP OF KAUFFMAN METALS -- A METAL ROOFING COMPANY IN SMYRNA MILLS. "WHENEVER YOU PUT A REALITY CHECK IF I MAY, ON THE INDUSTRY AND PUSH OUR DOMESTIC MILLS MORE, GET THEM INTO PRODUCTION, A HIGHER PERCENTAGE OF PRODUCTION, YOU SEE MORE STEEL ON THE MARKET, MORE STEEL MEANS A MORE COMPETITIVE MARKET, WHICH IS BETTER FOR EVERYBODY." 04;29;40;12 CULP ADDS THAT BUSINESS WON'T IMPROVE OVERNIGHT -- BUT IT COULD ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO BUY AMERICAN MADE PRODUCTS. <IT'S PROBBALY GOING TO BE ABOUT 3 YEARS BEFORE SEE STUFF, BEFORE WE START IF I MAY REEPING THE BENEFITS OF WHAT'S GOING ON RIGHT NOW." 04;31;03;37 TODAY PRIME MINISTOR JUSTIN TRUDEAU CALLED TH
