鈥業'm just so sorry鈥: Good Samaritan recalls moments she tried to save 5-year-old girl who died after Massachusetts crash
ON FIVE. SHAUN? YEAH, JUST A TRAGIC SITUATION ALL AROUND. THE MEMORIAL TO THAT LITTLE GIRL AT THE CRASH SITE HERE CONTINUES TO GROW. AND NOW WE ARE HEARING FROM THE FIRST PERSON WHO RUSHED OVER TO TRY TO HELP. HE WAS VERY UPSET AND SCREAMING, MY SON, MY SON! PLEASE CHECK MY SON. JULIE BLANEY WAS JUST BEHIND THE TWO CAR CRASH ON GROVE STREET IN FRANKLIN SATURDAY, AND RUSHED OVER TO FIND A FATHER SCREAMING FOR HIS BADLY INJURED SON. HE HAD SOME SIGNIFICANT INJURIES TO THE RIGHT SIDE, WHERE THE IMPACT OF THE CAR WAS. THE PATEL FAMILY WAS CELEBRATING THEIR SON鈥橲 BIRTHDAY AT THE TIME. THE WIFE ALSO BADLY HURT, AND THEIR FIVE YEAR OLD DAUGHTER LIMP, EVENTUALLY PASSING AWAY AT THE HOSPITAL. BUT JULIE WAS THERE CARING FOR HER. I TOOK HER IN MY LAP AND I HELD HER IN MY LAP UNTIL OTHER RESCUERS CAME, AND I BASICALLY KEPT HER IN MY LAP UNTIL THEY TOOK HER TO THE HELICOPTER. IN COURT, INVESTIGATORS SAID 21 YEAR OLD JAMES BLANCHARD鈥橲 PICKUP CROSSED THE CENTER LINE AND SLAMMED INTO THEIR CAR. POLICE SAID HE HAD BEEN DRINKING AT WORK AND HAD A BLOOD ALCOHOL LEVEL OF MORE THAN TWICE THE LEGAL LIMIT AT LANDSCAPING. HE SAID HE HAD TWO BEERS WHEN HE LEFT. HE OPENED THE BOTTLE OF TITO鈥橲 WHEN HE BOUGHT EARLIER AND BEGAN DRINKING STRAIGHT OUT OF IT AND DROVE HOME. IT鈥橲 AN UNSPEAKABLE TRAGEDY. IT鈥橲 EVERY PARENT鈥橲 NIGHTMARE. AND HIS THOUGHTS AND MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH THE PATEL FAMILY. IT鈥橲 JUST TRAGIC. THE SITUATION IS TRAGIC ON ALL ANGLES. THIS HEALTH CARE WORKER, THANKFUL TO BE THERE, TO COMFORT THE FAMILY. I鈥橫 GLAD I WAS THERE. I HOPE I SUPPORTED YOU IN SOME WAY. MY PRAYERS WILL ALWAYS BE WITH YOU. I WILL NEVER FORGET YOUR CHILD鈥橲 FACE. AGAIN. I鈥橫 JUST SO SORRY FOR THE LOSS. IT鈥橲 A BIG LOSS. BLANCHARD NOW FACES SEVERAL CHARGES, INCLUDING MOTOR VEHICLE HOMICIDE AND DRIVING WITH AN OPEN CONTAINER. HE IS DUE BACK IN COURT NEXT MONTH.

A health care worker says she witnessed the Massachusetts crash that took the life of a 5-year-old girl, and later tried to render aid to the victim before she succumbed to her injuries. Julie Blaney was just behind the two-car crash in Franklin Saturday evening and rushed over to the car. Blaney said she found a father, Atulkumar Patel, screaming for his son, who was badly injured. The wife, Minaben Patel, was also seriously hurt, and their 5-year-old daughter was limp in the backseat.Blaney said she held the little girl in her arms and tried to do what she could to help and comfort the family."She was moaning. So we just tried to support her, hold her, just holding her and trying to support her as best we could," Blaney said. "Meanwhile, crews were working on her brother and her mother, who were trapped in the car. And they were trapped for quite a while. It was a long entrapment."Blaney was thankful to be there just to comfort the family. "I took her in my lap and I held her in my lap until other rescuers came and I basically held her in my lap until they took her to the helicopter," Blaney said. "I'm glad I was there. I hope I supported you in some way. My prayers will always be with you. I will never forget your child's face. I'm just so sorry for the loss.
