Birmingham native returns to Barber as a rising race car driver
As far back as he can remember, Michael Suco has loved cars.
"When I was 10 or 12, back in elementary school, it must have been, I started playing a lot of video games with some of my friends and really had a love for cars growing up. That kind of fell into motorsports directly. I started watching movies on Netflix and some videos on YouTube, and my first question, like anybody else, was, 'How do I get into this?'" Suco said.
So, he started researching and at 16, the Birmingham native headed to Atlanta.
"I started out in four-stroke go-karts, referred to as LO206, with a family friend of mine, Doug and Eric Evans," Suco said.
A year and a ,half later he moved to cars, a move he says is like night and day.
"I remember full tunnel vision, scared for my life. Just bring the thing back in one piece," Suco said.
He eventually got past that fear, and now, at 19, he's in his second junior season.
"When I was younger, I didn't really know what I wanted to do, and I was constantly searching for that. But when I found motorsports, I knew immediately this was what I wanted to do," Suco said.
Along with racing full-time, Suco still goes to Auburn University.
"It's been a lot of work, but this is what I'm meant to do. I have to juggle both, and that's just how it is, you know, if that's going to be difficult, then I've got to deal with it," Suco said.
Now he's back at Barber, not as a spectator, but a driver.
"There's a really funny story of me coming here while I was in karting, and I said to my girlfriend at the time, I said, you know, maybe in three or four years I'll be here doing the same thing," Suco said.
After finishing 15th and 17th a year ago, he's hoping to be on top of the podium this time around.
"I dream of this so no exaggeration, this is the race I want to win if not anything else," Suco said.
