Alabama officials react to Jimmy Carter's death and legacy
People across Alabama and the nation reacted to the news of Jimmy Carter's death Sunday. The 39th U.S. president had entered hospice care and spent his remaining time at home with family following a series of brief hospital stays.Rep. Terri Sewell issued the following statement on social media."President Jimmy Carter was a remarkable leader and humanitarian who dedicated his life to public service. He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of humility and compassion that continues to inspire Americans of every background. May he Rest in Peace."Sen. Katie Britt released the following statement.鈥淔rom his time tending to his family farm in our neighboring Georgia to being leader of the free world, President Jimmy Carter lived a life deeply rooted in faith and service above self. As a native of the Wiregrass, I have always been especially inspired by this small town peanut farmer鈥檚 journey. President Carter truly lived the American Dream. However, it was his servant leadership after his presidency for which I respect him most. 鈥淎longside his beloved wife, Rosalyn, President Carter for decades gave every ounce of his devotion to lifting up vulnerable Americans and empowering them with the opportunity to pursue their own success stories. They did so humbly and whole-heartedly, never forgetting who they were or Whose they were. The characteristics the Carters unceasingly personified are ones by which we want the world to know the South 鈥 grace, grit, and goodwill. They leave behind not only an enduring legacy of faithfulness, but a clarion charge for generations to come to honor and emulate.鈥淲esley and I join families across Alabama in praying for the Carter family as they mourn the loss of a loving father and grandfather, and as our fellow Americans and people around the globe celebrate the life of an uncommonly genuine, good, and kind man.鈥 Former Sen. Doug Jones was a staffer for Sen. Howell Heflin during the Carter administration. He issued the following statement on social media."It is was great sadness that @louisenewjones and I mourn the passing of Jimmy Carter, an extraordinary individual who was a remarkable leader, statesman and humanitarian the likes of which we may never see again. Although a dedicated Son of the South (who grew up in the Jim Crow South) he led by example in advancing civil rights and voting rights. He was also a visionary; someone ahead of their time in protecting the environment and seeking global peace. A devout Christian he respected and honored the faith of others. He and his beloved wife Rosalynn led two of the most enriched lives that one could only imagine. America's leaders - present and future - could learn so much from Jimmy Carter. With his passing I hope they will take that opportunity. RIP Mr. President.">> 米兰体育 13 ON-THE-GO: Download our app for free
