The long-awaited demolition of the century-old Carraway Hospital in Birmingham is underway. This week, crews began tearing down two of 11 buildings slated for demolition to make way for a new mixed-use development called "The Star at Uptown." Learn more in the video above.
The first building to be demolished was near the corner of Carraway Boulevard and 15th Avenue North. The developer, Corporate Realty, said eight other buildings on the 50-acre site are scheduled to be demolished before the end of the year. Several structures, including parking decks and the hospital building, will be cleaned out and refurbished for future use.
鈥淭his is an important time for Birmingham and especially for our neighborhoods in north Birmingham,鈥 said Corporate Realty CEO Robert Simon. 鈥淭hese communities have been working with us for years, and it鈥檚 time for this land to once again be an asset for the city and the people who live here.鈥
In 2023, work will begin on a project to convert the hospital building into attainable multi-family housing. Other housing, commercial and entertainment spaces will be added over the next several years, the developers said.
The name of the new development pays homage to Carraway Hospital鈥檚 iconic blue star, which will be refurbished and remain on the site.
鈥淚 was born at Carraway Hospital, and I know what this place has meant over the years to Birmingham,鈥 Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said. 鈥淭his was once a source of jobs and economic vitality in this community, and the real story is we鈥檙e bringing this site back to life. This will be one of the biggest and most impactful developments our city has ever seen.鈥
