They're the shapes that have become part of history's texture, and they're in the grains of time. Brad Gal finds the grains of inspiration. We've been here, uh, just about 2 months now. When we're finished, that'll be, we'll be able to step back and and look at what we accomplished. It will be the world's largest off the beach sand sculpture. I'm just uh making the Hoover Dam plaque, an exhibition called Wonders of the World on display during the California State Fair. This exhibit will take you to exotic locations like Bavaria's Nussmanstein Castle, but the foundation is purely local. All 5.5 million pounds of sand came from the Sacramento River. It's very cheap. It packs up well, but it's *** little gritty and it has *** lot of rocks in it. If somebody were to be carving this out of marble or or any other medium like that, the cost of the material itself would be. Astronomical, but sand, it's cheap, but it carves fairly quick. The sand first goes into *** container. It's packed in tight. We have *** nice solid packed block of sand like this. Then the kids who never left the sandbox dress for success and go to work. For us it's the joy of carving of building it, of standing back and looking at it when we're done and. And then moving on to the next one. Each is strong enough to withstand the trials of weather, but not the test of time. That's OK. We call it job security. We're on the sandpile and we're having fun. At Cal Expo, Deirdre Fitzpatrick, KCRA 3 reports.
