FIREHOUSES BEEN A PLACE WHERE HE COULD SLEEP FOR THE LAST TWO MONTHS WITHOUT THIS PLACE. I鈥橫 BASED SOMEWHERE ON THE STREET THERE WITH TRANSITIONAL AND INDEPENDENT COULD BE ON THE HORIZON FOR HIM. TODAY BIRMINGHAM CITY COUNCIL TO APPROVED $1,000,000 BID TO BUY 50 MICROCHIP SHELTERS SIMILAR TO THIS TO HELP PEOPLE LIKE SIMS. ARE YOU SURPRISED THE CITY IS TAKING STEP TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS? I MEAN, FOR FOUR YEARS? MEGAN VENABLE THOMAS IS LEADING THE NEW PILOT PROGRAM AT HOME FOR ALL. SHE SAYS THE APPLICATION PROCESS IS OPEN NOW FOR NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS TO REQUEST MICRO TO SET UP IN AREAS WHERE THEY KNOW HOMELESS GATHER. OUR RESIDENTS, WHO ARE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS ALREADY HAVE COMMUNITIES. THEY ALREADY HAVE NEIGHBORHOODS OR WHICH THEY EXIST IN. AND SO IT ALLOWS US TO UNDERSTAND WHAT ARE THE NEEDS AND OPPORTUNITIES OF THE DIFFERENT NEIGHBORHOODS ACROSS THE CITY. APPLICANTS MUST PROVE THEY CAN PROVIDE MENTAL HEALTH, WORKFORCE AND CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES SO AN INDIVIDUAL HAS A PERSON THAT THEY CAN COME TO THAT CHECKS IN WITH THEM ON WHAT THEY鈥橰E DOING ON A DAILY BASIS. BIRMINGHAM IS THE FIRST IN THE STATE TO LAUNCH A PROGRAM LIKE THIS. I THINK IT鈥橲 SCARY TO DO ANYTHING FIRST, A LITTLE BIT, BUT ALSO, I THINK THAT IT鈥橲 ALWAYS OVERRIDDEN, AT LEAST IN MY MIND, BY THE NEED, A NEW NEED. John Sims says he鈥檚 been homeless for a while, and he鈥檚 grateful the Firehouse Shelter has been a place where he could sleep for the last two months. 鈥淲ithout this place, I could be somewhere in the streets dead or whatever,鈥� Sims said.Transitional and independent housing could be on the horizon for him. On Tuesday, Birmingham City Council approved a million-dollar bid to buy 50 micro shelters similar to this to help people like sims. 米兰体育 13鈥檚 Magdala Louissaint asked Sims, 鈥淎re you surprised the city is doing a step like this?鈥� He replied, 鈥淚鈥檝e been waiting for it for years.鈥滿eghan Venable-Thomas is leading the new pilot program, 鈥淧roject Home for All.鈥漇he says the application process is open now for non-profit organizations to request micro shelters to set up in areas where they know homeless gather. 鈥淥ur residents experiencing homelessness already have communities right.
