HIS LIFE. THERE鈥橲 NO QUESTION THAT I THINK HE WOULD HAVE BEEN THE THE NOMINEE OR THE VICE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE BECAUSE OF HIS STRENGTH. IN THE SPRING OF 1972, GEORGE WALLACE鈥橲 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN WAS ON A ROLL. SON GEORGE WALLACE JR WAS A REGULAR ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL, BUT HAD RETURNED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA WHEN A FRIEND SHOWED UP AT HIS APARTMENT ON MAY 15TH, AND A FRIEND OF MINE WALKED IN MY ROOM AND I FELT THE PRESENCE, AND I WOKE UP IN THE TOLD ME, YOUR FATHER鈥橲 BEEN SHOT. ARTHUR BREMER WAS ARRESTED AFTER GUNNING DOWN HIS FATHER AT A RALLY IN LAUREL, MARYLAND. WALLACE WAS PARALYZED FROM THE WAIST DOWN. HIS SON SAID THE CHRONIC PAIN HE SUFFERED SOFTENED HIM. ULTIMATELY, THE GOVERNOR, WHO FOUGHT SO PASSIONATELY AGAINST INTEGRATION, SHOWED UP AT MARTIN LUTHER KING鈥橲 FORMER MONTGOMERY CHURCH SEEKING GRACE. HE SAID I WAS RAISED TO BELIEVE IT WAS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF BOTH RACES, BUT MY CONSCIENCE HAS TOLD ME I WAS WRONG AND ALL I COULD DO IS ASK FOR FORGIVENESS. THREE YEARS BEFORE HIS DEATH, WALLACE SENT HIS CONVICTED SHOOTER A LETTER. IN PRISON, HE WROTE, ARTHUR BREMER, I LOVE YOU. I HAVE ASKED OUR HEAVENLY FATHER TO TOUCH YOUR HEART, AND I HOPE THAT YOU WILL ASK HIM FOR FORGIVENESS OF YOUR SIN SO YOU CAN GO TO HEAVEN LIKE I AM GOING TO HEAVEN. AND I ASK HIM ABOUT IT. ONE NIGHT. I SAID, DAD, HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO DO THIS? AND HE SAID, OH SON, IF I CAN鈥橳 FORGIVE HIM, THE LORD WON鈥橳 FORGIVE ME. BREMER WAS RELEASED FROM PRISON IN 2007, BUT REMAINED IN MARYLAND ON PROBATION UNTIL TODAY. ON THE DAY HIS PUNISHMENT ENDED, WE ASKED THE SON OF THE MAN HE SHOT ABOUT HIS THOUGHTS ON GRACE FOR THE SHOOTER. MY MESSAGE TO ARTHUR BREMER WOULD BE THAT MY FATHER HAS FORGIVEN YOU AND I STRUGGLE WITH IT, ARTHUR, BUT I鈥橵E FORGIVEN YOU AS WELL. SO JOHN BREMER SHOT WALLACE ON MAY 15TH, 1972. HIS PROBATION ENDED ON THE SAME DAY THIS YEAR. IS THERE A LINK BETWEEN THOSE TWO DATES? WELL, CHARI, IT鈥橲 A COMPLETE COINCIDENCE. I SPOKE WITH THE STATE OF MARYLAND THIS AFTERNOON. THEY ACTUALLY, A SPOKESPERSON TOLD ME THAT FOLLOWING HIS NOVEMBER 2007 RELEASE FROM PRISON, HIS PROBATION WAS SET TO EXPIRE TODAY WITHO
