Sports psychologist talks about mental health aspect after Hamlin collapse
It鈥檚 uncharted territory for so many NFL players after witnessing the cardiac arrest and medical attention of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin.
"Everybody wishes this young man well, just as I do and everybody else does," said Dr. Andrew Jacobs, renowned sports psychologist in Kansas City.
As NFL teams across the country now have to get ready to play again soon, Jacobs says it鈥檚 important for athletes to practice healthy mental habits.
"They're playing a game. It's their livelihood. So they got to focus on themselves and everybody individually has to get physically and prepare to go out and play," Jacobs said.
He says it鈥檚 the psychological part of the game that will be most important. Thankfully, he says there鈥檚 more of a focus now on mental health in sports and how to keep athletes physically and mentally safe.
"Now you're seeing the greatest athletes in their respective sports talking about how important the mindset is 鈥 being prepared, having a good attitude, having the confidence level and being able to deal with the negativity that comes up. The importance of mental health has been so important," Jacobs said.
