Meet Diane Nash: The Chicago woman who fought for civil rights in the South

SHE ROSE TO PROMINENCE WHEN SHE TOOK PART IN THE 1960 NASHVILLE SIT INS THAT AIMED TO DESEGREGATE RESTAURANT LUNCH COUNTERS. AS ONE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS OF THE STUDENT NONVIOLENT COORDINATING COMMITTEE, SHE CAME TO BIRMINGHAM AFTER THE FREEDOM RIDERS ENDED DUE TO VIOLENCE AND URGED REVEREND FRED SHUTTLESWORTH TO CONTINUE. NASH WENT ON TO LEAD ALL OF THE RIDES FROM BIRMINGHAM TO JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI. IN 1961. SHE ALSO HELPED ORGANIZE THE 1963 BIRMINGHAM DESEGREGATION CAMPAIGN. AFTER THE 1963 BOMBING OF 16TH STREET BAPTIST CHURCH THAT KILLED FOUR LITTLE GIRLS DURING THE SELMA VOTING RIGHTS CAMPAIGN, SHE WORKED ALONGSIDE DOCTOR MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. WHILE NASH WAS AWARDED THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM BY PRESIDENT BIDEN IN 2022 FOR HER, QUOTE, DRIVING SPIRIT IN DESEGREGATING LUNCH COUNTERS. Meet Diane Nash: The Chicago woman who fought for civil rights in the South
Diane Nash was born in Chicago. She attended Howard University, a historically Black college, before transferring to Fisk University in Tennessee.She gained prominence during the 1960 Nashville sit-ins, which aimed to desegregate restaurant lunch counters.As a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, she urged Rev.
