President Donald Trump is directing Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to focus deportation efforts on Democratic-run cities, including New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, while pausing arrests at farms, restaurants and hotels to prevent impacts to those industries.
In a , Trump called on officials to "do all in their power to achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History."
"The American People want our Cities, Schools, and Communities to be SAFE and FREE from Illegal Alien Crime, Conflict, and Chaos," Trump wrote. "That鈥檚 why I have directed my entire Administration to put every resource possible behind this effort, and reverse the tide of Mass Destruction Migration that has turned once Idyllic Towns into scenes of Third World Dystopia. "
Democrats and leaders in several cities have argued that the move is part of a larger, politically motivated strategy, while the Trump administration claims it will refocus resources more efficiently as it aims to ramp up arrests to 3,000 a day.
So far, the immigration raids have threatened businesses that supply a large portion of the U.S. with food and services, with the potential to drive up prices.
Several California farms, for example, that produce a third of the country's vegetables and more than three-quarters of its fruits and nuts, could be affected.
Many immigrants are reportedly also avoiding work out of fear that their workplaces may be the next target for ICE raids.
