How unexpected connections bloomed into lasting relationships

New connections form in the most unlikely places. Tune in to the latest Stitch episode to see how these remarkable connections unfold.

Sometimes the most meaningful connections emerge from the most unexpected of places from couples finding love to individuals discovering surprising friendships. Join us as we uncover the magical bonds created by chance encounters. Thanks for tuning in. I'm Stephen Alber. Our first collection of stories features couples who stumbled into true love when they least expected it. WCVB's Jennifer Egan logs on to tell us about *** Massachusetts couple whose electricity was sparked by *** computer program. Are people surprised when you tell them this is how you met? Always like so many other marriages these days, Alex and Gladys Reisman's romance began by computer, but what sets them apart is when they met that way. The couple took part in the first US computer-based dating program nearly 60 years ago. This took us all by storm. Something brand new. The boys were looking for dates and the ladies were looking for mates. Jeff Tar was *** junior at Harvard when he and *** friend came up with Operation Match in 1965. He says the computer program took off. 100,000 students across the country filled out his survey answering questions about their location, religion. And how attractive they thought they were. Operation Match was such *** hit at Harvard and beyond. It was featured in this February 1966 issue of Look magazine. Inside, *** picture of *** young Jeff Tar standing in front of an IBM the size of *** room. That's the computer that sorted the survey information. We had these ladies who would keep punch it. And put the information in *** 1401 computer. We found, say 8 people, and we gave each of the male and the female, the name, the phone numbers, and where they went to school and where they lived, and then people would get on the phone. And it was *** lot of fun. He called me. Alex only had to call one girl from his operation match results. He saved the computer cards that led him to his true love. They went on to have 3 children and grandchildren. Operation Match eventually faded. It was really *** fact that, you know, they didn't have pictures. It was subtle like it is now, but out of it at least *** few marriages and families. I'm so happy that they've been married successfully and it worked. It worked because they embraced something different decades ago. I just keep swinging the bat and eventually, eventually, uh, they'll hit it out of the stadium.
