The Birmingham VA Health Care System, in collaboration with local community organizations, has announced the Cultivating Connectedness event. This initiative is set to promote socialization, engagement, and support for Veterans, members of the U.S. Armed Forces, and their families.Veterans are dealing with Isolation and suffering from mental health issues. Recent VA research shows about 17 veterans die of suicide per day. Supervisor of social work with VA Birmingham East clinic, Melissa Evans, says they're hoping this new initiative will help support veterans during this crisis. 鈥淚f we can get them the treatment they need for that bottom line. For the depression or PTSD or their isolation, then we can help curve those suicidal thoughts for these veterans," Evans said During this event, they will also be sharing information about the Compact Act, where any Veteran, whether enrolled in VA or not, can go to a VA or non-VA emergency room for emergent suicidal care.
