Top-seeded Auburn rallies in 2nd half, beats Michigan 78-65 in Sweet 16 of March Madness
Updated: 8:27 AM CDT Mar 29, 2025
You're always in the same and I played bad again, bro damn, I played bad. OK, let's get started with Auburn, uh, coach Pearl, if you could just give us *** couple of quick thoughts and then we'll go to some questions. First of all, I'd like to congratulate Michigan, the Big 10 Tournament champions, uh, on an outstanding year. What, what an incredible first year for that staff to come in and turn that program around, and, uh, they were playing really well coming into this tournament. Um, having won the Big 10 tournament, so, uh, you know, obviously we went on *** 34 to 8 run in the second half, and it's just, it's just the kids' will to win. Um, they just locked down defensively, um, that Dylan Cardwell did an incredible job on Golden, um, now that Janaylan Cheney were physical with those guys and, and didn't let them dominate the game with their size, which, which they do against most opponents. And then I got *** couple guards got really hot. They really got heated up, you know, Denver got heated up and Todd got heated up and we went to them and uh and they delivered so great, great, great one for Auburn and you know, 4 teams from the SEC in the Elite Eight. That's pretty good. OK, let's go to some questions. First for the student athletes, please. So let's go to far, uh, left in the second row. My, uh, ESPN Virginia and Denver. What is Taha, uh, just been to this team and the success that you all have had, uh, this far? Oh, which one? I'm sorry which one for 9. OK, go ahead, um, you know, uh, it's very important. He has *** very important role on his team, you know, um, he does whatever it takes to win, you know, we need *** spark. He gives *** spark, you know, um, and he's ***, he's *** good person, good human being, you know, he listens to us, you know, as being *** freshman, um, but, uh, there's not too many freshmen who can take over *** game like he can, and, uh, you saw in today's game he had *** spurt where he just took over the game. Man, he just, he just *** special player, man, just not too many freshmen just built like him, uh, like I said, like some people just got it, you know what I'm saying, to how I got it, um, very special player, man. On the aisle on the left, 3rd row. Jamal Roland Junior 680 the fan toha to be *** freshman in this position, big shot after big shot, *** monster block at the in the first half. Can you just speak on your performance tonight? Um, started off *** little slow, um, not how I wanted to start, but having guys like this just to back me up knowing that they got my back is just amazing feeling. So just getting out there second half, um, getting back to what I usually do, and then obviously having guys like Denver and Janah stepping up to playing huge minutes and. Doing what they do best, so just having guys like that knowing I had had my back is *** good feeling to stay on the left on the 4th row. Rafael Haynes with the 3 point conversions for Jana, um, if any, what were the conversations like before you went on that run to get started on that run amongst the players like in time out and so, you know, we were playing bad. I mean, you know. Being honest, we played we was playing bad, um, and we was turning the ball over *** lot, you know, and we wasn't even, we wasn't guarding, uh, but we were still in the game, you know, so everybody just said let's get 3 stops and then 3 to 4 and then 4 letter 5 stops and then we won *** little run and crowd got involved and then you know we start playing up in basketball. Down front here in the first row. Robbie bracket.org. My question is for Juni. Um, you guys had your 34th 10-0 run of the season tonight. Where does this team's spurtability come from like that? Well, the defensive end, you know, we, we lay our hats on our defense, um, but then we have guys who can make plays, you know, Denver went on *** 10-0 run by itself, you know. Uh, to high on *** 10 run by himself, you know, it's just guys like that who can create shots. It, it takes *** load off of me, you know, um, I wasn't playing my best game today, but I have, you know, my guards come through and hit big shots. You had *** triple-double today. He did. Oh, look at the stats. No, no, no, no, he had *** triple double. He scored 22 points. He had 16 rebounds and he missed 11 shots. You had *** triple double. He got. I was like, no, I know, I know he was talking about. Front row on the left, uh, Shelley Winter 955 WSB. I just kind of for everybody. First of all, uh, Brother Pettiford, there's *** bunch of Jersey City up in the, in that, uh, crowd. I've been walking around all night, so we got *** places to go after this. But, uh, um, to the whole team there, there's *** point in time. Before the coach called time out, it seemed like there's some jawing back and forth guys looking at the bench and you call time out coach Pearl and you kind of let the team sit and stew by themselves. Can you talk? Can you all just kind of talk about that sequence of events? Janay, why don't you take that one, you know. No, you know, uh, we're brothers at the end of the day, you know, uh, brother's gonna bump heads. Um, everybody on this, on this that has an Auburn on wants to win, you know, um, and sometimes when you gotta go through some adversity, but, you know, coach has confidence in us to be able to, uh, we're *** player that team sometimes, so, um, *** couple guys say we wanna say, and then you gotta listen to, you know, what your teammate has and says, and then after that you shake it off and you go out there and play, um, hard for, uh, the coach for Coach Pearl. I mean just, I just, the deal was we, you know, they may we turned the ball over *** little bit we made some mistakes and I let them kind of jar each other *** little bit and then go, hey man, we're good we're in *** great spot. You guys are just, you know, pushing each other, holding each other. I love the energy. I love the energy. I love the pace. I just try to slow down *** little bit without with with, you know, with the ball we're just rushing. Let's go here on the right side 3rd row. Cheer him for the 3rd AL.com. Denver, the 100 run you had by yourself kind of talk about, you know, what got things started for you today, man, honestly just I seen one go in. I just feel the bake it got bigger and, uh, I just wanna continue being aggressive. Uh, coaches getting me more involved in the plays and I was just. Taking more advantage of it. Far left second row. We can ask Bruce *** question, right? Mike, I can ask Bruce *** question. Uh, Bruce, obviously *** lot of freshmen this year who who have, uh, gotten *** lot of publicity. We haven't heard as much about Taha, but what did you see in him when you, uh, decided to add him to this roster? Well, first of all, I want to give his father Travis and Ira Bowman my assistant coach credit because those guys are family friends and I think the biggest thing with Taja was we, we loved him when he was young and, and you know there were people were interested they were wondering how. I want you to, I want you to be on my team or be our scorer or whatever. And I think Tahid really, he remembered that when he was younger and we didn't waiver from it. And we just, you know, I think, I think he trusted Ira and he, and he, he, he's learned to trust me. He didn't know me very well. Um. You know, he, he, uh, I, I wanna give Janiah credit in this regard. These guys are best friends, OK? This is ***, this is *** senior in his 5th year. He's got *** lot of other stuff going on, but when it comes to just messing around and having fun, this is, he's, you know, he's just sort of loving on that little ***. That's all he's done. No, he is, he is *** little ***, you know. And, and he's loved on him. And, and you know what, and you know what, so Taja, he, he, he, he, he does, he cares about Dylan, he cares about the, he cares about the seniors on this team. You know, and he and he and he really wants to deliver for them. 2nd row here on the right. Uh, For the players in here, all of you, how big was the odds 3 when y'all came out of the time out down 9. And, and, and also. Could you just talk about what it means? To be where you are right now in in the Elite 81 step for the Final Four. Go ahead. You know, uh, that was actually *** broken play, you know, I, I messed the play up. I don't know who was calling, but as it shows his shot making ability and to be able to just, uh, you know, um, be *** dog at times, you know, uh, and make plays. So he came off the pick and roll, shot it, and, uh, he made it, you know, cut the lead at 6 and then you know had *** little bit say kinda messed the play up, but, um, it just shows how special he is though. Let's go to 3rd row on the left. Yeah, Jamal the JSA you're *** fan of, just *** quick question for all the players. I just wanna know like what was going on with the ball. It seems like everybody was kind of fumbling it or like lose control of it. Just was it slippery or is it just rushing or like what was that? I would just say it was *** rush, just rushing, uh, thinking about it too much. Um, we don't wanna blame it on *** basketball because obviously you can't, so, um, we just have to focus on, uh, catching the basketball and making the right decisions. Let's go on the right, uh, 4th row on the aisle. Dehaan Tate from Three Point Conversion here in Atlanta, um, I guess this question is for Janai or any of you guys can answer it honestly, um, obviously you guys are gonna enjoy the one that you guys have tonight and so forth, but. It's *** quick turnaround before you start looking at the next opponent when you just think about who that next opponent is and so forth, what instantly comes to mind how what what is your familiarity with that opponent? Um, you know, first off, uh, Tom Izzo. He's *** great coach, you know, he's *** Hall of Fame coach, um, so the Michigan State is *** very good team, um, but we're not gonna do too much celebrating tonight, you know, we got another game we gotta prep, we gotta take care of our bodies, we gotta rest, um, and you know, let's try to get to San Antonio to the Final Four. Let's go far left second row. Uh, uh, Jana, I believe Danny Wolf scored his last bucket at the 1306 mark, uh, you know, between you, uh, and Cardwell and Chaney, what were you all able to do to adjust on him to sort of deny his touches and frustrate him down the stretch? Well, you know, uh, coming into this game, you know, we, we worry about matches, we care about matchups, you know, we took this game personal, um, that's *** great front line, you know, but we wanted to challenge ourselves and see, you know. To make it, make it tough on them for him and uh Black Golden. So, um, I, I created my whole front line and even our guards for, you know, extending the ball pressure, not making it easy and not let them get in good spots. Got time for 2 more. Let's go here and then back. Robbietella.org. My question for Bruce. Uh, as I saw you walking off the court, uh, you were embracing the fans and, and saying one more. What does it kind of mean, uh, to have that fan base embrace you the way they did? It was loud in there tonight. Yep, I, I would say that our guys really appreciated the fans. Obviously it helped elevate their, you know, their play, um, but it was, it, it all stands back to the grind in the sense that this team. To this point has only lost one game at Texas A&M to *** team that wasn't in the Sweet 16. That means they respected their opponents. They didn't fear any of them, and he got ready to play every single night. I mean, we just really didn't get upset very often, giving us the number one overall, which then put us in Atlanta, which, you know, the, the overall number one seed should have some, you know, should be able to play close enough to home for your fans to see it. So and, and, and, uh, so they, they got rewarded. Last question back row. Uh, Jonathan Hoppe with WBRC in Birmingham. Coach Pearl, the shots just weren't really falling consistently until about maybe the 15 minute mark of that second half. As *** coach and *** staff, did you feel like, hey, it's coming, it's coming. What's kind of your thought process through that and trying to coach these guys up? Tell you what, if, if Michigan can turn us over, um, 15 times, Michigan State could turn us over 25 times, OK. And so that's *** concern and these guys know it and so we, we slop through our offense, give Michigan credit they extended, they bothered us and Michigan State's gonna be even better at it. That's one of the best defensive teams in the country. And they're gonna be very, very physical with us and um we, we've gotta do, we, we, we, we have some, we have some talented players that made some big plays offensively. We have to execute better and work harder and be more physical offensively and take better care of the ball, you know, to be able to win the next game. That's all the time we have. Thank you guys. I'm staying right. This is it. Got one more time is up. It is. Yeah, it's really standard operating procedure um I want them to talk to each other. I want them to, you know, get after each other. I want them to encourage each other. I don't wanna start coaching them as soon as they walk in the locker room. I want to just let those guys because let me tell you something, coaches can help teams win games, players win championships. I know you hear that all the time. It's really true. When those guys talk about getting stops or taking better care of the basketball or quit taking, you know, quit rushing offensively, it means *** lot more than when I say it. And so I let those guys and that's sort of standard operating procedure plus we had 5, it's ***, it's *** 20 minute halftime, so we had 5 extra minutes, but that's been the way it's been all year long. Thanks coach, thanks.
