The Homewood Police Department said officers were investigating a suspicious vehicle at a soccer field off Lakeshore Drive. When a uniformed officer approached the car that Peoples and his girlfriend were in, the officer smelled marijuana, according to a police statement.
The officer ordered both individuals to exit the vehicle. At that point, the officer saw a handgun in the driver's side door, police said.
According to the statement, Peoples resisted while the officer was attempting to place him in handcuffs for unlawful possession of marijuana. Police said Peoples broke away from the officer and retrieved the gun. The officer, fearing for his safety, then fired one round.

Police said Peoples fell to the ground with the gun still in his hand and that officers gave him multiple commands to drop the weapon.
However, Peoples' girlfriend told his family that he complied with the officer's commands and did not have a weapon.
Peoples later died at UAB Hospital after receiving emergency medical aid at the scene.
Homewood police have handed all evidence to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. An agency spokesman said they are arranging for the family to view body camera footage of the incident. A timeline for that viewing has not been announced.
The vigil is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Homewood Soccer Park on South Lakeshore Drive.
